From Rob Brodhecker:
Jason Boyd is your ring announcer. Darryl Hall, Mason Pike, and Michael Jones are the refs. "Fast" Eddie Layne and Boyd on video commentary. 175 in attendance plus 20 comps that were won from the radio stations, but it seemed like there were more in the VFW Fairgrounds.
Jason Boyd starts the show but gets interrupted by Matt Hankins and Shane Marx right away. Hankins goes off saying that Shane Marx is in the main event, and that's whenever he wants it to be. Hankins says that the main event starts now.
Shane Marx (with Matt Hankins) vs. Clyde Braddock for the PWA Heritage Championship
Well, that stirred things up a bit in the crowd. They trade blows right off the bell, with Braddock dropkicking Shane out of the ring. Shane and Matt regroup at the backstage entrance, coming back to the ring only to break up the 10 count. The crowd is firmly behind Clyde as they hate Shane and Hankins so much. Shane in control after Clyde misses a corner splash. Nice spinebuster by Shane. Clyde on the comeback and gets a near fall. Hankins gets up on the apron pulling the attention of referee Hall and Clyde. Clyde moves as Shane rushes in, Shane puts on the brakes, but Clyde pushes Shane into Matt. Clyde gets a near fall. Brain Blaze comes out and distracts Hall even more. Shane low blows Cylde, and that spells the end of the match. Shane wins at 10:25. Hankins announces the winner of the main event, Shane Marx. B+, the crowd loves to hate Hankins and Marx, Braddock looked good.
Danny Vegas vs. Buddy Flowers
Both men are newcomers to PWA, hailing from North Carolina. Flowers is rocking a hippy gimmick tossing some edibles to the audience. Vegas is ....something. He is, however, getting some loud reactions from the crowd, including using a stop sign that says, "Don't ring that bell," and ever so slowly taking off his glasses, hat and ring jacket to the disgust of the fans. Humpty Dumpty chants abound. Vegas outweighs Flowers by about 100 pounds. Vegas pins Flowers with his foot on the rope after Flowers misses a corner splash at 10:14. A surprisingly entertaining match, Vegas really worked the crowd, B-.
Vegas asks for and receives a mic. He insults the crowd and says that he came to PWA for some competition and championships, not for some inbreed hippies like the crowd. Crystal Rose comes out. She challenges Vegas to match, and Vegas accepts.
Danny Vegas vs. Crystal Rose
Vegas attacks Rose as she enters the ring. Rose slides over Vegas' attempted backdrop, and sunset flips him over for the pin at 34 seconds. Don't know if Vegas will be in PWA going forward, but if so, this match served a couple of purposes, firmly establishing Rose as a face, and making the crowd despise Vegas even more.
Brian Blaze (with Matt Hankins) vs. Tyson Dean
I'm looking forward to this. The action starts off hot and runs to the outside of the ring. Hankins provides the distraction for Blaze to post Dean. Back in the ring, Blaze is in firm control, getting several near falls, with Hankins getting some heat as well. A Hankins distraction backfires though, and Tyson quickly pins Blaze at 7:15 to the delight of the crowd and to the shock of Hankins and Marx. The crowd was loud throughout the match and is rubbing the loss in the face of the trio, B+
The Amish Outlaws (Hezekiah and Jebidiah) vs. Dem West Ga Boyz (c) for the PWA tag titles
The Amish Outlaws are carrying a black chicken named Bernice to the ring, and their entrance music is "Weird" Al Yankovic's "Amish Paradise" The Boyz are getting all the love from the PWA faithful. The Boyz win at 9:55 using their combo, C+. Being a "Weird" Al fan, I popped for the entrance. The Outlaws are from North Carolina and are relatively new to the business.
Bill the Butcher (with Oscar Worthy) vs. Geter
Worthy is on the mic, saying that two days ago, the ugly children of the ugly crowd went dressed up as monsters, begging for candy. He has the real monster, Bill the Butcher. Geter can come and trick or treat this. At the bell, Worthy tries to cause a distraction, but Geter's prepared for it. Geter sends Bill ringside with several chops to the chest. Back in the ring, Worthy pulls the middle rope down, and Geter is after Worthy. Bill follows and tosses Geter into and through the barricade. That section of the crowd got up close and personal with him. Bill's in control until the action goes back out of the ring. Worthy hit Geter with the umbrella while the ref was checking on Bill, and Geter chases Worthy around the ring. Bill intercepts Geter with a foot to the face. Both men are counted out at 8:34. Geter chases Bill and Worthy to the back, B.
Intermission to put up the cage.
Shane Noles and Ace Haven (with Amy Haven) vs. The Southern Mafia (Greg Dotson and Johnny Rage)
Shane and Ace come out to the ring, Shane holding a torch. The Mafia attack from behind, tossing Shane into the ring and leaving Ace lying out on the floor. The Mafia are double-teaming Shane, and he eats the cage. Ace gets locked out of the cage. The Mafia leave the cage to attack Ace, and they smash a bottle across the top of his head. The Mafia are back in the cage and using the former torch to continue to do damage to Shane. Ace is climbing the outside of the cage and crossbodies both members of the Mafia. Everyone climbs to the top rope. Rage Russian leg sweeps Shane from the top turnbuckle. Ace hurricanranas Dotson out of the other turnbuckle. Ace and Shane get Rage out of the cage, and they do some double-teaming of their own. Shane superplexes Dotson, and Ace splashes down from the top rope for the win at 8:06. B+. The crowd went bananas for Shane and Ace's win
Two masked guys dressed in all black, storm the ring area and take out the Mafia, who were recovering ringside. They get into the ring and toss powder into the faces of Ace and Shane. They threaten Amy, but Romeo comes to the ring with a chair. He teases joining the masked men but then attacks the masked crew. Romeo takes off his jacket, and he's wearing a PWA shirt. Ace and Shane seem wary of Romeo as he has been an adversary in the past. Ace shakes Romeo's hand, and Shane eventually does as well. The masked team has been attacking both heel and face tag teams for the past several months. We'll have to see how this pans out in 2020. Several fans were in disbelief that Romeo is now a babyface.
Main Event: Marco Wicker vs. Ben Buchanan with PWA Commissioner Tommy TooMuch as the special guest referee
Ben attacks Marco from behind as Marco was parading around the ring. Marco eats some steel. Ben drags Marco to the roll-up door and throws Marco into it. They fight in the bleachers near the restrooms and are making their way around the building. I had to evacuate. Ben gets Marco into the cage, and the match starts. A "We want blood" chant starts. Marco shoves Ben off and into the cage. Marco grabs a chain from a pocket, but Tommy grabs it from him. Marco's working on Ben's arm, Ben's selling it like crazy. Ben on the comeback. Marco mule kicks Ben's groin. Marco goes for the chain again, and Tommy grabs it back. Ben gets a near fall from that. Ben wants to use the chain, and Tommy says no and takes the chain from Ben. Ben turns back towards Marco and Tommy slugs Ben with his fist wrapped in the chain. Marco pins Ben. Ben is bleeding heavily from the top of his forehead. Time 9:39. The turn by Tommy sends the crowd into a frenzy.
Bull Buchanan was sitting out at Ben's gimmick table, and he rushes towards the cage. Tommy and Marco quickly climb over and out of the cage. They escape to the back with Bull chasing after them. The crowd is looking for Tommy and Marco's head and doesn't want to leave. Bull comes back ringside and says that he had told Ben that things like this might happen, but he would be damed if he would let that stuff happen to his kid. He says that people have been asking if he's coming back, and he gives a resounding yes! He wants Tommy and Marco in a match. The next PWA show is in Jan.
After an admittedly not good year, this show, with nearly 200 loud and raucous people in the building, pumped some much-needed energy into the promotion to end the year. With the two month delay until the next show, Peachstate will need to find a way to keep the heat going until then.
