From Rob Brodhecker:
Tommy’s Auction Barn, LaGrange, Ga.
My tour of promotions
that I haven’t been to in Georgia comes to the home of Down Home Championship
Wrestling in LaGrange, Georgia. This is different. As seen in the pictures,
this building has a low, slanted roof, necessitating the use of a low ring set
up. I’m sure you could do some moves off the top rope and turnbuckles, but you
would have to be extremely careful if you do so.
The building itself is packed out, with at least 120 people
in here when I’m writing this at 7:50 and more coming as this is a free and
open to the public show. They have a decent concession area with the typical
fare plus some ice cream products.
Gad help me, someone has a bull horn.
I’m probably not familiar with a majority of the talent
here, I basically came to see AJ Black and Jaden Vain. DHCW run on the second
Saturday of every month and can be found on Facebook as: The one and only Down
Home Championship Wrestling.
The Ring Announcer Tommy McCann opens the show, starting off with a prayer and the National
Anthem. Ref Jacob Howard had a stroke last month but is recovered. Jordan Laster
is the other referee.
1: “The Natural” Jaden Vain and “The Gifted One” Josh Cross
Vs. “All That” AJ Black.
Vain says Cross is there to ensure he will win. Black says
that since Cross is out here, let’s make this an elimination triple threat. Vain
and Cross take turns trying to attack Black separately, he fends them off. They
finally gang attack him and Black takes the punishment on his leg. The crowd
rallying Black, but he eats a double suplex. Cross and Vain do a lazy cover,
Cross shoves Vain off, he wanted the pin. No honor amongst thieves as they
fight. Black tries to take advantage, his knee gets clipped. Black pins Cross
at 7:14. Cross goes after the knee of Black; he gets escorted out. Vain
continues the on the knee of black with a single crab, Black makes the ropes. Black
with a near fall on the leaping cross body. They are fighting out on the floor,
Ref Jacob starts the 10 count and counts both men out at 9:38.
Vain gets one last cheap shot in, and promises to never come
back. Black says that Vain will be back and this has just begun.
Nice job with the 3 young guys.
2: Representing the Brothers of War: Stanley Summerville with
Knot, Leprechaun, and Psycho Clown vs. Aeric Ragnarson.
Summerville’s crew surrounds Ragnarson in the ring, he
prevents them from coming in. Summerville gets in the ring. One of the crew has
the bull horn and uses it to yell insults at the crowd. Heel stuff by
Summerville on Ragnarson after the first couple of minutes, basically a 3-on-1
targeting the arm. You would think that Ragnarson was a member of a Tennessee
police department here. Summerville lands a cutter to put Ragnarson out of
misery at 7:01.
The crew surrounds Ragnarson but they seem more interested
in talking, hard to hear with the crowd yelling over them. Ragnarson tries to
escape but takes more punishment on the arm.
3: The Devil’s
Advocate (David Burkett and the Sadistic Widow Maker with Da Boss) vs. Jesse
James and Bubba Duke.
The Devil’s Advocates are channeling the dark side of things,
playing up the creep factor. James comes out by himself, they had taken out his
partner but James has a backup plan. Duke comes out to a large pop. Mud hole
stomping commences on the heel team and they retreat and regroup. They try
again but get repulsed again. Duke’s head butts get sold like he was Afa or
Sika. Boss’s kendo stick comes into play. I didn’t hear the bell ring so I have
no idea if the match has started or not. James takes the heat for his team. I
guess the match has started but it seems the ref is only there to declare a
winner. Hot tag to Duke, he goes off on the heels, forcing them to leave the
ring. Big body slam then leg drop on Widow, he just gets the shoulder up. James
in and Widow hulks up on him. Heat back on James. Duke tries to splash Widow against
a building support but posts himself. Boss and David bring out a table to the
ring area. David sets James on top and goes up top and lands what looks like a
leg drop or a knee on James through the table. They toss James back into the
ring for the 3-count. About 30 minutes from when David and Widow first came
out. James has to carried to the back.
Well, that was interesting.
Intermission. Feb 11th is the next show. Several
people were dancing to some of the music.
4: Sean Nelson vs. Lance Tucker.
Things get chippy before the bell rings, the ref has to
assert his authority. After several tie-ups, it gets even chippier, I have a
feeling that these guys don’t like each other. Nelson takes a breather on the
floor. Sticking to mostly wrestling, Tucker in control. Nelson’s praying for
mercy in the corner, lures then pulls Tucker face first into the turnbuckle. Nelson
plants Tucker with a swinging black hole slam for the win at 7:37.
5: Stanley Summerville with the Brothers of War vs. Playboy.
Double duty for Summerville tonight, facing Playboy and now bringing a thick chain with him. I remember seeing these guys when I went to
some shows in Whitesburg. The match starts with fists flying and they knock
each other down. Action out on the floor, Summerville brings a trash can to the
ring area and that gets used. Aeric Ragnarson runs out and drags Psycho Clown
to the back, evening things up a bit. Summerville and Playboy were still
fighting, Playboy reverses a suplex attempt on the floor. They fight out into
the crowd, on the far side of me. People scatter as they fight their way to the
concession area.
They come back to the ring, and Knot hands Ville a small chain.
Playboy crashes and burns with a splash from the top rope. Knot distracts the
ref while Ville uses the chain on Playboy and Playboy is bleeding. Playboy
grabs the chain from Summerville and uses it on Summerville and now Summerville
is bleeding. Heavy flow on Playboy. Summerville uses a second chain on Playboy,
knocking him out and gets the pin at 9:19.
Aeric drags out a beaten down Psycho Clown, demanding a match at the next
show. Knot agrees and there are some stipulations thrown around, again, hard to
hear. Several people attend to Playboy as he is really bleeding hard. I believe
an ambulance was called as there were some ambulance lights flashing through
the doorway several minutes later.
6: Alister Crowe with Amara Kay vs. Chic Donovan.
Crowe still has one of the creepiest gimmicks and entrances
in the SE. I think Donovan did a double shot tonight, coming from OSW as they
were running about 45 minutes away. He leads a parade of kids dancing around
the ring, one of which is holding up a title. Crowe plays the stalling game
(where’s Boy George when you need him). Chic targeting the arm of Crowe and he
retreats to the floor. Crowe spits mist into the face of Chic, blinding him.
Crowe targets the face of Chic, Kay gets a couple of shots in as well. Chic
fights back and lands a suplex and sets up for the fig 4. Crowe taps at 4:30.
Chic plants a wet one on Kay’s lips after the match. The
crowd popped for that, Kay not so much.
Main Event: The Dirty Villains (Elrod Campbell and “Dirty”
John Brewer) vs. Kydd Kush and Sir Wesley Williams.
A match-up of the grizzled veterans and young adults who just
got the training wheels taken off. Don’t know anything about Kush or Williams
apart from what’s on FB. Kush is the definition of a surfer guy; Williams is a
young aristocrat with a stuffed animal of some sorts named Sir Benjamin. The
youthful exuberance is prevailing in the opening minutes, but a cheap shot from
Campbell puts the heat on Williams.
Heel tag tactics ensue and crowd is hating every second of it. Hot tag to Kush who is leaping and flying everywhere. Double team on Campbell for a near fall. Brewer throws Kush out of the ring and punishes him out on the floor. In the ring, Campbell DDT’s Williams, then with the ref checking on Kush, Campbell goes to hit Williams with a foreign object, but Williams ducks and Campbell hits Brewer instead. Kush cuts off Campbell while Williams pins Brewer at 8:39. The youth prevail tonight and they pose for pictures with some fans afterwards.
Final Thoughts:
I didn’t realize at the time, but I had sat myself to the
right and behind one of the speakers, so that’s one of the reasons why I had a
hard time hearing what people were saying.
I admit to being somewhat surprised that Kush and Williams
won. I don’t know if they had been there before or not, but I would have
thought that Campbell and Brewer would have won being that the crowd knew them.
I believe a youth movement is well under way in
West/Middle West Georgia and the crowds are responsive to them.
I’ve been saying this quite a bit recently (and will
continue to say for the next several months anyway), for this being my first
time at DHCW, it was super easy to know who to cheer and who to jeer. I don’t
know what the background stories were, but when the bad guys do bad guy shit, you
don’t need to know much to ride along with the crowd. And bad guy shit
happened.
