Carolina News & Notes for May 8

From Jeff Richards:

Now that May has begun in earnest, let's take a look at the next few upcoming weekends for some travel opportunities. We missed a good one last Saturday (5/3) with GOUGE running a benefit for the Stem (NC) Fire Department. It was GOUGE's annual "Cinco de Mayhem" show @ the Fire Hall. Jimmy Jack Funk Jr. retained the GOUGE Championship against Otto Schwanz (former ECW/WWE/TNA Bo Dupp); Seymour Snott fought to a double countout with Gluteus Maximas; Mickey Gambino, coming off a big heel trio win at OMEGA's 4/26 event, tamed Timmy Lou Retton. GOUGE (Gimmicks Only Underground Grappling Entertainment) heats back up on Saturday May 17th in Fuquay-Varina at the Flea Market.

This Saturday, May 10th, Carolina Wrestling Showcase (CWS) invades the East Side Community Center in Asheboro, NC. It has been a while since the Asheboro area has seen good wrestling, so it was big news when CWS started running shows there. Scotty Matthews, a veteran of the mat wars, currently is holding the group's Legacy Championship. May 10th's show will feature Snott vs. former NWA National Heavyweight Champion Lou Marconi. The Mid-Atlantic Outlaws, winners of the 2014 Ivan Koloff Tag Team Tournament in Clayton, NC, will see action. Their opponents have grown up in CWF Mid-Atlantic rings: Aaron Biggs & Chris "Sho Smoove" Lea. Also on CWS' card this weekend: Sha Sha McGrady, Will Demented and Rob Killjoy.
Premier Wrestling Federation (PWF) made a name for itself in the state of Pennsylvania and has announced a NC date for Friday May 16th. This may signify that we will not be seeing Steve Corino on an OMEGA Championship Wrestling event again. Corino will host this debut event in Hubert at the Bingo Hall and be joined for the festivities by Chasity Taylor. Already announced is an intriguing match-up featuring Mr. Wrestling 3 vs. C W Anderson. In tag team action, Andrew Everett & American Tiger will tackle a pair of Ring Wars Carolina vets, James Anthony & Victor Andrews. Formerly with the NFL, Moose Ojinnaka debuts for this promotion that night as well.

Another premier wrestling organization will take the stage on Saturday, May 24th, and that group is Premiere Wrestling Xperience (PWX). Debuting in Archdale, NC (same zip code as High Point), PWX returns to the Triad at The Factory. Tickets are a little steep for its initial show ($20 front row); however, all active military in uniform are admitted free! On the show will be Caleb Konley, Cedric Alexander, Billy Brash, Anthony Henry, Lance Lude, Worst Case Scenario and others. Ironically, only one member of Los Ben Dejos, Jay Rios, has been signed. Look for Ojinnaka to make an appearance at this event as well.

Also on Saturday May 24th, ROD has another show planned for the Hickory (NC) National Guard Armory. The ROD Title will be up for grabs as Killjoy and long-time veteran Abel Adams will compete. Adams has made a signficant impact in ROD, running the locker room and working with the less experienced workers. James Drake is set to face Stumpy Grimmett, and Alexis Parrish is booked as well. Tickets are $6 adult, but with military i.d. you will be admitted free. College students get in for just $4. With Big Time Wrestling running at the Crawdads Stadium on Sunday June 1st, this may be the side trip to skip.

One show which will not be run is the May 17th Tri-State Championship Wrestling (TCW) card planned for Fairview, NC. Owner Tim Tolar has decided to leave the business, citing personal reasons. His group's departure from the communities of Riceville, Fairview, etc. will leave a big void. Tolar is noted for giving opportunities to up-and-coming wrestlers like Ryan Hunter, who has branched out into the Southeast. The 5/17 spectacular would have introduced younger fans to Ox Baker, and the "Young Gunz" were set to debut as well.
