Deep Southern Championship Wrestling presented Gunner vs Gunner Miller in Blue Ridge, Georgia Saturday night for their 6th anniversary show. After seeing that match announced, I had decided that I wanted to go check that out but then I saw the card for Southern Fried Championship Wrestling in Monroe and wanted to give them a chance. My buddy Devon Hales and I loaded up for Monroe around 4pm and hit the road toward Monroe. 5:30 PM came and we weren't even to Dalton, GA yet due to traffic so we decided due to Slim J and Logan Creed doubleshotting at PCW that we didn't want to get all the way down there to have missed their matches... so we went back to the original plan of checking out DSCW. Always nice to have good options and DSCW was a really good option on Saturday night.
DSCW and it's sister promotion GPW often present good matches that mean very little in the long run in a spot show setting. That was not the case Saturday. It felt like a continuation of a bigger and building story. Good matches were presented, stories were told, and people were given a reason to keep coming back to see one of the best family-friendly shows in Georgia.
Attendance was 131. A lot of the fans were loud, passionate, and seemed familiar with the wrestlers – which was nice.
DSCW Commissioner & GPW Co-Owner Darrell Morris (fresh off a recent appearance on HGTV that wasn't related to wrestling) addressed the crowd and was interrupted by Logan Chase, who came out with a crutch. Chase said his client Torque would be demanding his rematch with Ray Ray for the GPW Cruiserweight Championship. Morris said he was entitled to that but if Torque didn't win then he'd never get another shot as long as Ray Ray held the title. Morris brought up the upcoming championship cage match between challenger Johnny Rokk vs Logan's client and the current Southern States Title holder Cyrus. Morris told Chase he was going to make sure he didn't interfere by putting Chase inside a cage. Chase got excited that he'd be in THE cage but Morris corrected him and had the referees reveal a small, separate cage that Morris has welded together especially for Chase. Chase went away furious and we got our first match.
1) Cousin Cletus d. Lamar Phillips by pinfall in 7:42
Phillips was wearing a nice-looking new singlet that I'd never seen him wear. Phillips wore Cletus down and used any advantage he could find over the bigger man. Cletus, with the crowd very much behind him, battled back with a big stomp and splash to finish the obnoxious Phillips off.
2) The Movement (Chip Hazard & Talon Williams) d. The Society (Shaggy & Zero) w/ The Hatter by pinfall in 8:57
The Movement and Good Ol Boys feud recently came to an end after dozens of matches all over the state for months and months. In a bizarre incident, Shaggy put on the hat of the Hatter and went nuts. He turned on his longtime partner Cletus and has joined forces with the creepy Hatter, who has also enlisted the services of a mysterious masked man he calls Zero. In the circle of respect and hate, The Movement saw Cletus outnumbered 3 to 1 with the Society and joined up to work side by side with a man they worked against for so long. The Society took their cheap shots in this match but couldn't answer the smooth doubleteams of The Movement. The Movement won it with a double sunset flip. Hatter jumped in to make it a 3 on 2 attack. Cletus ran in with an ax handle to even the odds and The Society backed off and scattered.
Cletus said it would be 3 on 3 when they meet in Canton, GA at the Old Buffington Elementary school gym on Saturday, June 11.
There was an intermission that featured many of the fan favorites coming out to sign autographs and greet fans, including former TNA star Gunner and Gunner Miller.
3) Torque w/ Logan Chase d. The Hatter & Ray Fury in a 3 way dance by pinfall in 10:58
The match started with two in the ring and one on the apron but escalated into all three men competing at the same time. This match had some impressive and quick action, with Fury's creative offense shining through. Fury hit a DVD on Hatter but the opportunistic Torque stole the pin before Fury could recover. The crowd showed appreciation to Fury for his efforts.
Empire Wrestling owner Drew Delight came to the ring and said that GPW and DSCW were inferior companies to his Empire and he was there to pick off the weak like a lion stalking gazelles. He said he had a big announcement to make and boy did he ever. He said that when Darrell Morris was looking to get into wrestling that he had first come to him and that they had a 50/50 partnership drawn up. Darrell came to the ring and said it was true but that Drew had tricked him by not originally signing the paperwork and then going behind his back to sign it later. Darrell said he made agreements with Big Woody Greg Hullender for GPW and his commissioner role at DSCW without realizing his previous agreement with Delight was valid. Morris told Delight if he was as superior as he thought he was then why doesn't he face someone at DSCW. Delight said sure. Morris said what about Ray Ray? Delight said he'd leave and never come back if someone like Ray Ray could beat him.
4) Drew Delight d. Ray Ray by pinfall after referee interference in 11:34
Ray Ray, the ultimate underdog, fought his heart out. He hit flurries of offense on Delight, including some awesome quick submissions. Ray Ray came off the top with a flying bodypress that put an already down and out Delight down for the count. Referee Brandon Bailey grabbed the leg of Delight and pulled it over Ray Ray then did a quick count to give Delight the win.
Drew celebrated after the match and yelled, “That's my boy!” - revealing Brandon is, in fact, his son – which I'm not sure has ever actually been acknowledged.
5) Big Wood Greg Hullender d. Big Will by pinfall in 4:08 to win Big Will's 5 minute $500 challenge
Will and Wood are former partners and they're both big bodied, veteran guys. They brawled from post to post with stiff shots. Woody fought back no matter what Will threw at him so Will went to the floor and pulled a taser out from below the ring. Woody blocked the taser shot and grabbed it, using it on Big Will to pull off the win.
6) Gunner d. Gunner Miller by pinfall in 18:44 when Miller missed a spear and hit a chair in the corner.
This was another big challenge in the post-Empire career of Gunner Miller. He sized up well with the former TNA star and they showed mutual respect before the match and early on in the match with handshakes. That changed throughout the match though, as Gunner grew increasingly frustrated with the evenly matched Miller. Gunner began to grab handfuls of Miller's hair and grew whatever he could do to wear down his opponent. Miller hung with him and continued to have an answer for Gunner's offense, including kicking out of a spear. Gunner set up a chair in the corner. Miller charged at Gunner for a spear that Gunner avoided, sending Miller headfirst into the chair. Gunner covered him for the pin.
Big Wood announced that he felt like Miller deserved a rematch and asked him if he was available for July 16th. Miller said he was and the rematch was set for that date.
