Over 500 wrestling fans came out to watch professional wrestling on Saturday night in McMinnville, TN! Unfortunately, the crowd was split amongst two events less than a mile from each other as half of them were at Revive and the other half were at a school show put on by TAPW that had tickets as low as $2 for students.
(Editor's note: James Storm and Shane Helms, who both wrestled on this show were on the poster for the UCW show in Athens the same night.)
The action at Revive was good for the most part. Crowd just wanted to see stars and barely reacted to anything in the first few matches - especially the falls. Whoever ran this event backstage and kept everyone to their times did a great job to squeeze in 8 matches and 30 something wrestlers into a 2.5 hour event. Kudos!
The ring announcer came out at 6:50 and told us, "Revive Wrestling Doesn't Take a Knee!" YEE HAW! (he didn't say Yee haw but people cheered like crazy for his statement)
Preshow) Chris Classic won the Battle Royal by eliminating Lord Frost in 3:43.
The introductions took as long as the match. The first 8 competitors came out together and then Lord Frost, a bigger, weathered guy with facepaint that did a firebreathing gimmick(FROST with Fire? *shrug*). The competitors initially ganged up on Frost, who threw them all off... sorta. Quick eliminations and Frost thought he had it won, only to be dumped over the top by Classic who had gone through the ropes and hid out at ringside.
1) Brett Ison d. Sawyer Fulton & Matt Gilbert by pinfall in 6:45 on Gilbert after a double underhook piledriver.
Fulton was super over. He's in phenomenal shape, has a lot of size, and charisma. They started out brawling and Fulton clotheslined Ison out. Fulton underestimated the MUCH smaller Gilbert but did take him down and out. Ison threw Fulton out, threw Gilbert to him and then dove on them through the ropes. Ison hit a running knee in the corner to Gilbert for 2. Side suplex hit by Ison. Gilbert caught off the top by Ison and Fulton Hit a cutter for 2 on Ison, as he brought them both down. Gilbert stopped Fulton's onslaught of Ison. Fulton missed in the corner and Gilbert charged and was thrown out. Ison was caught by Fulton and dropped back from his shoulders. Fulton climbed to the top but was thrown off with a double powerbomb from Ison and Gilbert momentarily working together. Ison leveled Gilbert with a big right and finished him off with a double underhook piledriver for the win at 6:45. Fun match. Crowd didn't know what to think of Ison.
2) Aja Perrera d. Jessicka Havok by pinfall after a pull in facebuster in 7:03
The larger Havok overpowered the recently crowned SHINE champion to start. Failed shoulder tackles from Aja. Havok was taken down by the feet of Aja after Aja did an inverted springboard off the ropes. Havok took control and applied a Boston Crab. Suplex by Havok and then she attacked Aja in the corner until Aja moved and fought back. Aja avoided Havok's attacks and took her down with a cutter. Havok hit a big kick to the head for 2. Aja tried to sunset flip over but Havok wasn't having it. Havok missed sitting on Aja. Aja hit a pull in facebuster for 3 on the kneeling Havok at 7:03. Havok with a show of sportsmanship afterwards. It flowed pretty well and I enjoyed it.
3) Sami Callihan d. Fred Yehi by pinfall in 13:33... and 14:33
Sami immediately hit Yehi with a big kick and stomped him in the corner and then hit a running chop to 3 corners. Yehi unleashed the wrestling abilities and took it back to Sami. Callihan kicked Yehi off the apron and then from the apron. Sami missed a chop into the post and they attacked each other into the corner barricades. 2 fans(The Gann brothers!) held Yehi while Sami hit him with a trashcan lid. Sami tried to run around the ring but Yehi pounced him into the rail, which scarily moved into the fans. Yehi took Sami to the entrance area and tried for a countout win but Sami got in at 9.99. They battled back and forth back in the ring and back out of the ring. Yehi missed his own chop and hit the post. Sami slammed him on the apron. Both made it back in at 9.999. Sami ended a running attack battle with a DVD. Fred stomped the toes of Sami and took him down for 2. Fred took Sami down with a hard chop to the neck . Sami with a double underhook driver to his knee. Ref counted to 3 as Fred kicked out at 13:33.
Sami took the mic and said since the referee was S####y, why don't they do 5 more minutes? Fred applied a Koji clutch but Sami got loose and hit a piledriver for the win in about a minute. The best wrestling action of the night to no one's surprise with the only knock really being the referee botch on the first pinfall.
4) Revive Pro Tag Team Champions Adam McCormick & Uncle Byf retained in a 4 way match over Ohio Versus Everyone, The Young Wolves, and The Bomb Shelter by pinfall in 12:53
This match was chaos. A lot of it was fun but there were 3 to 4 things happening at all times and so it was hard to isolate anything until the made it back into the ring. OVE isolated one of the Wolves. Randi worked over McCormick and Byf. Xfactor to Dave by Schwartz after nearfalls. Byf took out Schwartz, Randi took out Byf. Wolf took out Randi. Wolf took out Adam. There was a dive sequence to the outside. OVE with a smooth assisted up and over dive. It was beautiful and perfect. Randi ran into the rope and then dove out. Ouch. Tower of doom with Byf at the top was quite the sight to see. One of the Wolves tried to pin everyone after the Tower but they all kicked out. OVE hit a super suplex bomb for 2. Adam crotched Dave and caught Jake in a wheelbarrow. Byf hit a big running forearm and then a cutter with McCormick holding Crist for the win at 12:53. Crowd was excited.
5) Jeremy Travis d. Simon Grimm by pinfall in 14:45
This was one of my least favorite "name" vs local guy matches I've ever seen. The crowd really turned on it too after a while with the exception of one man and a couple of kids. Simon absolutely schooled Travis in technical wrestling. Travis' counters were just puzzling. Travis had a few minor advantages in the match but for the most part he was purely at Simon's mercy. Crowd chanted "Simon" as Travis took his beating because they accepted how outmatched Travis was here. Travis took Simon down with a big forearm and hitting running knees in the corner followed with a DDT for 2. Simon with a Tiger Driver for 2. There were a couple more nearfalls. Travis hit a spear/tackle for 3 at 14:45.
Simon offered a handshake after the match but then pulled his hand back and spit right in Travis' face. Travis hit a superkick and walked around the ring to find someone to cheer for him.
6) The Hurricane d. Nick Traimer w/ Scene Nick by pinfall after a chokeslam in 8:27
Scene Nick called everyone trash and said they're fat and lazy and that Traimer is the present and future.
Hurricane came out to a nice ovation. Hurricane with the early advantage. Traimer fell to the "What's up with that" pose off the ropes. Hurricane pulled Traimer in for a facebuster in the ring. Traimer went to the outside where Hurricane chased him and chopped him on the barricades. Scene Nick got involved a couple of times as Traimer distracted the ref. Traimer catapulted Hurricane into the bottom rope. Traimer with side slam to Hurricane for 2. Suplex by Traimer. Big comeback from Hurricane with clotheslines and a neckbreaker. Death drop for 2 by Hurricane. Traimer blocked a chokeslam and kicked low as the referee was distracted. Traimer spun Hurricane off of his shoulders but he kicked out at 2. Scene Nick got on the apron and Hurricane pushed Traimer into him and then hit the chokeslam for the win at 8:27. Crowd really liked this and it was good. I believe this may have been my first time seeing Traimer live outside of when he first started training a couple of years ago. He did well here, has some potential, and is getting some good opportunities in Alabama and Tennessee.
7) James Storm d. Drew Game by pinfall after a superkick in 14:35 with an assist from McMinnville's own Duke the Dumpster Droese.
Drew Rave, I mean GAME stalled for the first 3 minutes and then hit Storm from behind with a sneak attack. Storm brought the fight to Game though and Game bailed out to avoid the superkick. Storm went to the outside and let a fan chop Game and then took Game around the ring and into a fan's shoe. Game pulled Storm into the post on the outside and went to work throwing Storm on the hard gym floor several times. Game worked over Storm in the ring. Game missed a moonsault off the top. Storm answered with a flurry of offense including a neckbreaker and airplane spinoff. Game ran into a boot in the corner from Storm but hit a dropkick that had both men down. Game hit a back senton splash on Storm for 2 and got 2 chairs. The ref took one away but Storm accidentally hit the ref when charging Game. Game threw Storm headfirst into the 2nd chair that he had positioned in the corner. Scene Nick and Nick Traimer ran out with Traimer grabbing Storm's leg to prevent the superkick. Duke the Dumpster Droese ran out and nailed Traimer with the can. I was hoping Scene Nick would end up in the can but he weaseled away and hid behind the timekeeper's table. Droese hit Game with the can and then Storm superkicked him for win at 14:35 to send everyone home happy.
They announced they would return to the VFW in December. You can check out their Facebook page for more information. Overall it was a fun event. I hate that their crowd was cut into 2. Hopefully they can scale these types of events down to something more financially feasible for them in the future if they want to continue to bring in "name" talent. Jillian Hall also appeared at the event. She signed a couple of autographs before the event started and was gone with no involvement in the actual event.
