Even though 2018 has been a year of the rebirth of Puerto Rico's wrestling scene, there were many ups, downs, and surprises.
World Wrestling Council Still Stands Tall Despite Criticisms from Internet Trolls and Adversity
2018 may have been their toughest year due to “so-called” wrestling fans, who are nothing more than Internet trolls by not paying a ticket and sitting on the computer all day long. Through adversity, just one year after Hurricane Maria struck the Island, World Wrestling Council still stands tall with the continuing loyal support of their fanbase that still attend their live events.
From “The Precious One” Gilbert taking over from “Mr.Raytings” Ray Gonzales as the newest leader of El Sindicato just weeks after WWC’s 45th Anniversary Show weekend, the returns of Carlito Caribbean Cool, WWE SmackDown! Live’s Primo Colon, Dirty Dutch Mantel (Zeb Coulter), “El Patron” Alberto Del Rio and his brother El Hijo de Dos Caras (Memo Montenegro in the final days of Florida Championship Wrestling before it was rebranded simply as WWE NXT), L.A. Smooth Sons of Samoa, “La Fuerza Tactica” Anarchy, “El Principe de las Tinieblas” El Diabolico, “El Ilegal” Chicano and Zcion RT1 (who recently formed his own promotion, Revolution Wrestling Entertainment in his hometown of Ponce, which serves as WWC’s development territory), the man formerly known as Peter The Bad Romance, who changed his name to Pedro Portillo and once again became one half of the WWC World Tag Team Champions and was very close in becoming WWC Puerto Rican Champion, the debuts of former WWE and ECW Champion and current Lucha Underground champion Jack Swagger and Ring of Honor World Tag Team Champions, Mark and Jay Briscoe who appeared throughout WWC’s 45th Anniversary Show weekend, to the promotions New Era superstars, “The Movie Star” Bellito Calderon, who was World Champion in San Juan,PR’s CWS promotion and became both WWC Puerto Rican and Television Champion, Makabro, Jovan, “El Controversial” Sr. C (who left WWL and is wrestling also on Puerto Rico’s indy circuit and in IWA Florida), former EWO Puerto Rico’s and Florida’s House of Lucha Champion Luis Barreto, El Gigante Nihan, Guevara, El Gran Armando, the former EWO Puerto Rico World Tag Team Champions “La Ola de La Violencia” Doom Patrol, Cold and Death Warrant, who came to WWC in the late summer to wreak havoc against both La Revolucion and current WWC World Tag Team Champions, Thunder and Lightning, and finally “El Alma Perdida” Xavant who ended 2018 by solidifying his status as the current WWC Universal Champion beating former champion, The Mighty Ursus in a two out of three falls, Steel Cage of Death match at WWC Lockout.
WWW kicks off 2019 with Euphoria on January 4 at the Mayaguez Sports Palace, Mayaguez with an and January 5 at Mario Quijote Morales Coliseum, Guaynabo. Advertised: the return of all The Colon Dynasty, Carlito, Primo and Epico along with former WWE Superstar El Torito and CMLL Mexico’s Demus returning to WWC Puerto Rico after almost three years.
IWA Puerto Rico Returns with a Vengeance
With the huge buzz around Social Media, along fans throughout Puerto Rico, all across America and Worldwide have been clamoring for IWA Puerto Rico’s return. It has been six years since the promotion has closed down its doors and folded for no reason. Because of the fans reaction as well as “El Boricua Mayor” Savio Vega,his brother Dennis Rivera, Moody Jack Melendez, Hurricane Castillo,Jr, “El Malcriado” Miguel Perez,Jr., Shane,The Glamour Boy, even Slash Venom (Flash Flannigan in the now defunct promotions USWA and Music City Wrestling and in Ohio Valey Wrestling.) did their best to revive it in WWL, but they among the other talents formed a mass exodus left there (WWL) from Summer to Fall of 2018. World Wrestling League Suffers Mass Exodus of Talent and Ends Year with New Television Deal and a Fresh Start
World Wrestling League had a wonderful to the year. Sadly during the summer and fall months, the promotion suffered a mass exodus of talent. From the departures of Savio Vega and Team IWA, El Nazareno, ”La Chica de la Actitud” Roxxy”La Perla Negra"Allison, Vassago, Stryder, Vanilla Vargas (who has three women’s Championships under her belt as well as have been touring in AAA promotion in Mexico, Colombia and taking part in WWE’s Latin American tryout in Chile this past November.), Mike Mendoza, Angel Fashion (who like Vargas had a WWE Latin American tryout) former WWL World Champion “The Mecha Wolf 450” Jesus De Leon, who had to relinquished the title days before their High voltage event, and finally, the departures of tag team champions West Side Mafia. Mafia lost the titles to Los Primos Melendez and the entire Puros Machos with Manny Ferno at WWL's year ending event in Dorado.
Richard Rondon announced that WWL High Voltage will have a new home on the Telemundo Puerto Rico network starting January 2019 with a Saturday time slot.
WWL's start of 2019 event is Genesis at the Angel Musico Hernandez Ampitheater in Dorado on January 19.
The New Borinquen Pro Wrestling promotion in Fajardo, formed by Danny Nieves, who worked for WWC Puerto Rico and the now defunct NWA Lucha Chicago promotion, is working with WWL. Starting in 2019, the NBPW will serve as WWL’s development territory.
CWA: 10 Years of Success
Champions Wrestling Association started in 2008 as a minor indy wrestling promotion in Comerio. The fan base has grown during 10 years of success. In 2018, CWA started bringing well known superstars such as Al Snow, Robbie E, Deonna Purazzo,Lio Rush, Roderick Strong, Shane Strickland,Tasha Steelz, Jay Lethal, top Florida Papi Nieves, The Dirty Blondes, Maxx Stardom (who was the CWA Intercontinental Champion managed by Salina De La Renta only to lose the title to Leirnord White in a Six Pack challenge on the promotion’s final event of 2018, Christmas Showdown in San Juan), DJ Z (Zema Ion), Caristico (The Original Sin Cara in WWE), Matt Cross (Son of Havoc of Lucha Underground), Tessa Blanchard, former CMLL Mexican National Women’s Champion and newly crowned CWA Women’s Champion:Zeuxis (whom like Deonna Purazzo participated in the WWE 2018 Mae Young Classic), “The Undead Bride” Su Yung, “La Guerrera” Amazona, Hiram Tua, “La Amenaza” Brian, Black Pain, Rey Horus (Dragon Azteca),ECW Original Super Crazy, “The Villain” Marty Scrull, Matt Sydal, “Bad Ass” Billy Gunn, NWA World Champion Nick Aldus, Colt Cabana, Aero Boy, Tony Ice, Rey Fury ”El lobo” Syler Andrews , “El Mesias” Ricky Banderas, former WWL World Champion,”The Mecha Wolf” 450, “La Chica de la Actitud” Roxxy, Invader #1, and the explosive return of West Side Mafia to CWA after over three years at The Victor The Bodyguard Memorial Cup when Ponce, PR’s 100% Lucha promotion invaded CWA. These were among many of the stars who made CWA a major wrestling promotion in the Island.
After almost two years in being CWA World Champion, Sensational Star Roger lost the title to Justin Dynamite. “El Magnate Cubano” Rodrigo Garcia still retains the House of Lucha International Championship, defending not just in CWA, but in CWO and all over the states.
CWA's first event of 2019 event is called Reyes del Hexagono (Kings of The Hexagon) at the Pedro Rosello Covention Center, San Juan PR on January 5.
