From Nick McDaniel:
I’ve been hearing a lot of buzz coming out of the Augusta Ga area promotions and decided it was time to make the long haul down and see what all the talk was about. The word coming out of the area is that Viral Pro should be placed in the same discussion with the top dogs in the state so I made it my first choice to check out.
The show opened with a “dark match”, yes a dark match, at 6:45PM so as the crowd filed in, there was action in the ring already. At first I thought the concept was just weird but it did get the fans entering the building to get to their seats quickly, so if that was their idea, it worked. The match was essentially a comedy match between Jacob Ryan and Fluffman. It served it’s purpose and entertained the incoming fans with Fluffman picking up the win.
The opening bout on the main show would be for the VPW Outbreak Championship with champion, Owen Knight, facing Impact star, Crazy Steve. The fans were really into Crazy Steve and Owen Knight drew a good amount of heat. The match was ok but nothing outstanding. It ended in a DQ when Steve came off the second rope for a double axe handle but Knight kicked him low right in front of the ref.]
The following match would be Montana Black vs Chuckles the Clown. Montana clearly gets the name from his size as he is HUGE. Chuckles started out the match by walking around and headbutting the turnbuckles and doing a few comedy spots. It was odd to essentially see another comedy character but Black eventually got his hands on him and took him down with a monstrous chokeslam for the win. Black is huge and as a big man in any promotion has a future.
A short video package recapping and setting up the casket match between Wade Adams and Sixx played to bring everyone up to speed if they haven’t been to every show. This isn’t done at many shows but is very helpful to people attending their first show like myself or ones that have missed here and there.
Next up is Lucky Ali vs one of my personal favorites to watch, Jason Kincaid. I first saw Kincaid at WrestleCade a couple years ago and he was amazing then and he didn’t tonight either. Ali looks like he has a lot of potential but Kincaid can dance with a broom so I will definitely have to see more of Ali. The match was a little too long but Kincaid gave a great example of how to put over a guy and still look good as Ali picked up the win but no one left thinking any less of Kincaid.
Following a costume contest with the fans, we get the match I made the drive for. AC Mack vs Chip Day was easily my most anticipated match on the card. Mack is making a case for wrestler of the year and when on his game, Chip can run with the best of them. We got Mack’s entertaining entrance but I was disappointed that I didn’t get Chip’s long list of nicknames entrance. It’s the little things, folks. The two both exhibited why they are two of the best in the state and put on a very good match. Mack should be a heel everywhere he goes because his work fits the bill excellently. Chip picks up the win and looks like he’s in the groove to move up the ranks in the state’s best.
After a brief intermission, we return with Owner, Josh Hancock, making a presentation of new tag team titles. He stated those titles would still be defended even with the release of one half of the champions, Joey Ozbourne earlier today, That is another topic all together for another day. The International Superstars would defend the titles with Blanco Loco with their female member, Dream Girl Ellie vs The Monster Squad (Josh Cutshell & Billy Brash). I’m not the biggest fan of intergender wrestling but Ellie held her own with the men in a solid back and forth match. The Monster Squad tossed Ellie on the James Kitchens led faction who had made their way to ringside in the hopes of helping the members (Superstars) allowing Brash & Cutshell an opportunity to hit the double team and become the new VPW Tag Team Champions.
Next up is the anticipated Casket Match w/ Wade Adams vs Sixx. These matches are difficult to pull off on any level of production but extremely hard on the indie level. The match was every bit of the brawl you would expect in this type of match. There were several spots with both men in casket fighting, multiple weapons used, and overall mainly chaos. The match would end when an unknown individual interfered and helped Adams get Sixx in the casket and close it for the win. I’m not a huge fan of these and haven’t seen one executed well on the indie level other than SFCW’ recent Crossroads show.
The final match of the night would feature two great talents in Joey Lynch vs Sean Legacy. The winner would become the new #1 contender for the VPW Championship. The two started out in a flurry with dives, reversals, and high flying. The crowd likes Lynch but loves Legacy it seems. He’s a hometown guy who truly has the fans’ support. The two are putting on one hell of a match when Kitchens and his group come out and have a face off with Lynch & Legacy from the floor. However, Montana Black sneaks in from behind and levels Lynch & Legacy allowing the group to come in and put the beatdown on the two sending the fans to wonder what would happen now. Would one, both, or neither of them be the new #1 contender? Only time will tell as VPW returns on Dec. 14th.
The show was overall pretty good. I lacked some of the back stories so I could not hold that against them and VPW does do a good job with video packages helping that exact issue. The sound system had a few issues thru the night but I will say that when it was working (most of the night) that their production level was pretty solid. Are they at Southern Honor’s level? No, but who is? When stacked up against most of the other competition their production is very good.
The main question asked to me at the show afterwards was how do they stack up overall with the big promotions in Georgia. My answer is this. They drew a solid crowd of around 165 by my count and seem to be in that area consistently. The match quality top to bottom was pretty good. The production is good. The promotion is good. They deserve to be in the mix of the top 5 in Ga for sure and with more time to iron out the wrinkles, Top 3 wouldn’t be out of the question. Don’t just take my word for it, check them out Dec. 14th at the Sweetwater Gym in Thomsan, GA.
