Puerto Rican wrestling legends "El Sultan de Mayaguez" Jose Luis Rivera and "Super Medico" Jose Estrada Sr., who left a legacy in both WWE and in World Wrestling Council's 49 Years of History, became the first most successful version of The Conquistadors from 1988 to the early 1990's on WWE television and live events. The Conquistadors faced everyone: the Hart Foundation, Bushwhackers, Rougeau Brothers, British Bulldogs, The Rockers and so-on.
During the 1990s, the Conquistadors went their separate ways.
Estrada Sr. went to WWC to win the promotion's World and Caribbean Tag Team Championships (with his son, Jose Jr., who along with "El Malcriado" Miguel Perez Jr. and "El Macaracachimba" Hurricane Castillo Jr. went to the WWE in 1997 during the Attitude Era in aiding "El Boricua Mayor" Savio Vega forming Los Boricuas as a part of The Gang Wars) and by teaming up with NWA Championship Wrestling from Florida legend the late Sweet Brown Sugar (Skip Young) in late 1991.
Rivera left WWE to join WCW for a year as a jobber for both the old WCW Saturday Night and WCW Worldwide programs until 1991, when he went back to Puerto Rico to join the now defunct Americas Wrestling Federation promotion rivaling WWC at the time. Rivera won the old AWF Americas Championship two times in 1992, then went back to WWC when the AWF folded where he fought the likes of Dirty Dutch Mantell, Doomsday (Glenn Jacobs, WWE Hall of Famer Kane) and Ron and Don Bruise (the Harris Brothers, a story unto themselves). Rivera's last match in WWC in March 1994 was with El Exotico.
There have been several imitation versions of The Conquistadors in WWE over the last twenty years from The Hardy Boyz, Edge and Christian up to Kurt Angle. None were as dominantly successful as Rivera and Estrada Sr.
Here are three matches from Jose Luis Rivera's and Jose Estrada Sr.'s run in the WWE as The Conquistadors as they square off first against Omar Atlas (Venezuelan Wrestling legend who fought in WWC Puerto Rico's early years as the original Super Gladiator) and Brady Boone (who became a referee in WCW throughout the 1990's), then against NWA World Wide Wrestling legend Bob Emory and John Latue (who appeared in WWC Puerto Rico as John Savage in 1993), and the third is a match against Terry Taylor teaming and Sam Houston.
