Nathan Mowery's Blood and Honey series brought death match wrestling to Atlanta Saturday night at Monk's Meadery. It was an outdoor show with 60-70 people in attendance. The crowd seemed to be a mix of Mowery supporters, curiousity seekers and a few wrestling fans.
There was enough gore and violence to satisfy everybody and horrify some. Compared to the other death match shows I've attended, there was also more solid pro wrestling. In a good way. Shitty death match wrestling devoid of skill gets monotonous.
Mowery and Dominic Stuckey far the best match of the night. Mowery is much higher level at this stuff than the others. His death match offense is deep. He tested Stuckey who was game for anything and passed with flying colors.
Mowery opened the show with a brief primer on why his match was with Stuckey -- how they were wrestling "cousins" through the Devil's Rejects lineage, Stuckey trained by Iceberg, Mowery trained by Tank. Mowery wanted to know what Dom was made of even if he had rip him open and see what's inside himself. Mowery explained the only two rules to the audience:
1) Don't get in the ring or we will rip you up and send you to the hospital.
2) Have a good ass time.
Mowery introduced a guy named Mikey (Carvajal) from the band Islander as the ring announcer. He reminded me of Mikey Whipwreck in a good way.
(1) Jameson Shook defeated Erron Wade in 10 minutes. Wade is a skilled athlete (5th degree black belt) notorious for his eccentricities. Shook, the SCI Futures Showcase winner had beaten Suge D the night before and was not about to take a back seat to anybody, deathmatch or otherwise. They were doing a lot of talking. Wade pounded a gusset plate into Shook's scalp. He had copious blood dripping down his face in a hurry. "I'm just a boy!" Shook gave Wade a cutter and applied a gusset plate to his head, then busted light tube upon light tube on his head. Wade was leaking blood. Shook placed a door over Wade and did a cannonball into the door. Wade gave Shook a karate punch directly to the groin. Wade tried to roundhouse kick a light tube bundle into Shook's head. That didn't get work so Wade busted the tubes over Shook's head and pinned him.
(2) Lizzy Blair defeated Payton Blair in a Kiddie Pool of Rubbing Alcohol Match (4:10). The twins were stiffing each other pretty good and enjoying it way too much for my comfort zone. Payton used a tack bat on Lizzy's head and ass and pounded a gusset plate into her heat. One twin to the other: "I"m gonna tell mom on you!" Lizzy planted Payton in the pool with a spinning neckbreaker.
Matt Griffin made an appearance. Griffin said f*** every single one of you people for causing the downfall of acceptable wrestling in this state. He vowed to have Mowery's future shows canceled and ran down Coven of the Goat as hillbilly inbreds. He got heat for that remark and then wanted to check browser histories. Covenant of the Goat's CJ Lawler took exception calling Griffin a bald head bitch and a pussy hole. A masked woman known as Selina Cyanide sneaked into the ring behind Griffin and did a number on him with a kendo stick.
(3) Board with Cut Cans Match: Sean Christopher (with Ravenna Vein) defeated Spectre in 11:45. All Christopher early. He cracked Spectre's skull with a Russian leg sweep onto a chair. Spectre ran Christopher's head into the jagged edges of the cans. Christopher bladed pro wrestling style. Spectre bled hardway. Not sure how it happened. Might have been the spot where he got bashed with an object while he had a pumpkin on his head. Ravenna went after Spectre. He tried to stop the Vampire Baddie by holding up a cross. That didn't faze Ravenna so Spectre put her down with a light tube and suffocated her with a plastic bag. Spectre bridged the cut can board between two chairs and said he wanted to end it with a Frankensteiner through the board in honor of Halloween. Ravenna whacked Specte off with a barbed wire crutch and Christopher put Spectre through the cut can board with an avalanche version of his signature move, Dirty Pretty.
(4) Nathan Mowery defeated Dominic Stuckey in 14:58. Stuckey was wearing a Tank t-shirt. Said he had proven he was a tough SOB over the last 8 years. Ring announcer Mikey admitted his bias in favor of Mowery. Stuckey said there was nothing like the Hitmaker Experience.
Stuckey attempted to make good on his threat to beat Mowery with wrestling until he springboarded into a light tube. Mowery got the blood flowing with a gusset plate and took a staple gun to any number of Dom's body parts. Mowery sliced Stuckey's forehead with a hack saw. The action spilled outside the ring. Stuckey did a dive off of the dumpster. Mowery "borrowed" a hammer from the ringside area and pounded a gusset plate into Stuckey's chest. The crowd wanted Mowery to bleed. Stuckey made it happen with a gusset plate. Stuckey poured a bag of thumbtacks onto the mat and gave Mowery a russian leg sweep into the tacks and they both paid the price. Mowery headbutted Stuckey with a light tube and tried to grind the jagged edge of the tube into Stuckey's skin. Mowery said he was going send this MFer to hell. A barbed wire board was bridged across two chairs. Mowery had Bombshell soak the door with gasoline and light it. Mowery he sent Stuckey through the fiery barbed wire board. The smell of burnt wood was in the air. Stuckey tried for a package piledriver and took a light tube to the head from Bombshell. Mowery lit his elbow pad on fire and pinned Stuckey with a flaming elbow drop off the ropes.
Mowery said he was proud of Stuckey for rising to the occasion. He offered a handshake. Stuckey came to his feet for a show of mutual respect, then gave Mowery a low blow and a curbstomp.
Stuckey got physical with Bombshell outside the ring and the show ended in chaos.
