From Larry Goodman:
Platinum Championship Wrestling kicked the build for Sacred Ground VI into high gear last night in Porterdale.
I had planned on being in Temple for the UIW show, but found myself drawn to Porterdale by the promos on PCW’s Facebook page. UIW likely had better wrestling. I wanted story. Little did I know what a story I was in for.
Going into the July 18 show, the question was who would hold the PCW title going into Sacred Ground – Champion Shane Marx or Carpenter.
Just when the fans thought they would get their answer, PCW changed the question. Carpenter cashed in a banked stipulation of his choosing and opted to give the Washington Bullets the title shot in his place. Bam! The Williams brothers now hold the PCW World Title as a unit. Even the master of verbal manipulation known as Stephen Platinum wouldn’t take a stab at explaining that one.
This weird turn of events set up the Bullets’ first title defense against Johnny Danger last night. To say that Danger lacks a tough guy aura is to state the obvious. He couldn’t choke a chicken at a luau. What Danger brings to the table is an understanding of his supreme underdog character – how to get said character over and keep it that way.
Of the PCW shows I’ve attended in Porterdale, this one came the closest to the feeling of their shows at the Academy Theater. The main event was chock full of twists and turns and insane, illogical surprises. If I read it on paper like you hopefully are about to do, I would have through it was too stupid and silly to work. Yet as the craziness unfolded before my eyes, things were happening so fast that it was impossible not to be swept away by how damn entertaining the whole thing was.
The wrestling wasn’t anything great but it was good enough. The talent was much better than was my last trip to Porterdale. There was no Meathook match on this show. It was the emotional punch that mattered. The stories and the strength of the characters carried the day.
Attendance was 75, reasonably full for the venue at 2001 Main Street. PCW his drawing a more adults crowd these days. Venue owner Tim Savage has the beer taps flowing, and the Company Store Deli is now operational in the storefront space.
Platinum opened the show with a 10 bell salute to Roddy Piper. Platinum said there would be no PCW with Piper. Over breakfast, Piper convinced Platinum that he should be running his own show rather than falling down for a living. For the full story, check out Tipping Point Tuesday night. Platinum said he had three wrestling idols, Piper, Jake Roberts and Ric Flair, and if there was a Mt. Rushmore for pro wrestling, they would be on it.
As a tribute to Piper, Platinum said they were going old school and there would be no entrance music, the way things were when Piper broke into the business. It was interesting to note that he reaction to the entrances did not suffer.
(1) Bill the Butcher & Dementia D’Rose
defeated Trevor Aeon & Damien Silva in 10 minutes. Butcher and D'Rose were the heels. Without knowing the back story on them, it was
an unnatural act to have bad feeling towards D’Rose fighting against two
men, nor could I fault Butcher for his repeated interference on her behalf. Butcher
tagged in and destroyed Silva, who eventually turned Butcher’s spinebuster
attempt into a DDT. Tags were made. Silva
was preparing for a leap off the top rope when Butcher again rescued his stout damsel
in distress, and D’Rose pinned Silva with an assisted waterwheel slam.
(2) “Marvelous” Marko Polo defeated Velvet Jones in 7:38. Grudge match here and I liked it a lot. A familiar story but well told. Quality over quantity -they no more than necessary, stuck with stuff that looked good and gave things time to digest. Velvet’s selling was a plus. For the finish, Velvet countered Polo’s flying clothesline with a uranage, then rushed in for the kill which Polo neatly countered with a rolling prawn out of the corner.
Polo was left laying after a postmatch attack by Butcher and D’Rose. Butcher potatoed Polo with his chain. D’Rose nailed him with the flying ass.
(3) Miss Rachael defeated The Carpenter via DQ in 7:48. Match got off to a shocking start when a female “fan” faked a high five with Rachael and threw powder in her face. The maniacal Carpenter took full advantage, punishing the blinded Rachael like a man possessed. When Carpenter knocked himself silly with a series of missed diving headbutts, Rachael received a water bottle from a fan to clear her eyes. Rachael capped off her comeback by getting Carpenter in the Arch. Carpenter raked the eyes to break the hold and whacked her with his broken baseball bat for the DQ. It needed to feel like a fight rather than a wrestling match and it did. It was all about the fans having that crucial emotional investment in hatable/lovable characters.
Platinum said he had good news and bad news for the Porterdale fans. The bad news was that Sacred Ground VI would take place in Atlanta this year at 7 Stages (on September 26). The good news - a special one hour show in Porterdale that afternoon featuring the Tag Team Season semifinals, plus bus transportation to Atlanta for Sacred Ground VI with a special VIP section for the Porterdale fans.
(4) Big F’N Deal (Geter & Brian Blaze) defeated New Priority Males (Tyson Dean & Haikken with Quasi Mandisco) at 8:03 in a Tag Team Season match. Platinum put the debuting Dean over for his one hour Ironman versus Jimmy Rave. Dean told the fans they couldn’t walk around Walmart for an hour much less wrestle that long. The response to Geter was amazing. He’s the ultimate Alpha Male. Haikken (alleged to be Platinum’s evil cousin from Japan) is the same guy that wrestles as Kevin Park for Anarchy. Dean’s presence was key to keeping the very green Haikken from getting too much exposure. The Males isolated Blaze. Geter was steaming. Blaze hit a killer sitout double underhook suplex to set up the hot tag. Geter decimated the Males and pinned Haikken after Big F’N Deal smoked him with their signature combo finisher.
(5) The Washington Bullets (Trey & Jon Williams) defeated Johnny Danger (with Devlin Valek) in a Porterdale Streetfight to retain the PCW World Championship in 21:47. Danger came out to a “Danger City” chant. I guess Freebird rules are being applied because Trey wrestled for the Bullets and did an incredible job of controlling the match and the crowd. The fans wanted tables, then they wanted the action to go to the street, and Trey gave them zero satisfaction. This was nothing but a walk in the park for Trey, and he made sure everyone in the building knew it. They weren’t doing much and yet the match never dragged. Danger made Trey miss a legdrop from the heavens and applied a really shitty looking sleeper. Trey mule kicked Danger in the gonads to break the hold. Both men down. 15 minutes gone. Danger made a comeback of sorts. Trey blasted Danger with two superkicks. Danger’s fighting spirit kept him upright. A third superkick put Danger down but he kicked out of the pin. Danger returned the favor with a knee to Trey’s nuts and hit the JDT. Carpenter blindsided Valek and one-by-one, the heels hit the ring – Butcher, D’Rose, Velvet, Haikken, Dean and Carpenter, each laid out by one blow from superman Danger. It was completely ridiculous. Mandisco entered the ring with brass knucks. Danger cut Mandisco off with a face full of green mist. Trey was coiled for a belt shot, but the ref snatched it out his hands, and Danger caught Trey with a flying Yakuza kick for the 1-2-3.
The crowd erupted for Danger’s improbable moment of triumph. The babyfaces came out to celebrate. Carpenter ordered them to leave, threatening to DQ Danger and informed Danger that he needed to defeat both Bullets to win the title. Danger came within an eyelash of pinning Jon, thanks to screw up by the Bullets, before Trey superkicked Danger and the Bullets hit the Marion Barry to win the match.

Carpenter said Danger was the heart of PCW and tonight the heart must die. As Carpenter prepared to bludgeon Danger with a baseball bat, Platinum appeared with a bat of his own along with Simon Sermon rocking angel’s wings.
A surreal sequence of events ensued. The heels charged at Sermon and he laid them all out with the angel’s wings. Don’t ask me how. Platinum squared off with Carpenter and they dueled with their baseball bats ala the lightsaber duel from Star Wars. Carpenter won the duel after Platinum lost his bat. Sermon tried to make the save and was being beaten to a pulp when Geter hit the ring. The heels bailed.
Geter said Danger was indeed the heart of PCW and he was the fight. Geter told the Bullets and Carpenter (cowering at ringside) that he would kick all of their asses at Sacred Ground. Geter raised Danger’s hand for a hearty “PCW” chant to close the show.
Platinum told the crowd that he made the long drive from Orlando because of the dream Piper planted. After three years Sacred Ground found a home in Porterdale. “And wherever we go, you crazy, stupid SOBs are coming with us.”
