Different Chant (Not "PWX") Heard @ Show's End
HICKORY (NC) -- Maybe fans did not flock to the National Guard Armory last Saturday (12/19) night because of the high ticket prices. It could have been the perceiving that this was another "B" show being brought to Hickory (bigger shows come to Charlotte). If more people had shown up and stayed throughout the night, hopefully they would not have been chanting "this is bulls***."
Unfortunately, "Xperience the Force" ended with that particular vocalization. Booker Patrick Price had PWX rolling into town off a Dusty screw job finish at the last show ever in Winston-Salem's Ziggy's. A strong main event ending was needed to send PWX out with a bang and momentum for 2016. A run-in DQ or "no contest" was not what PWX' faithful were anticipating, and they let everyone know.
Otherwise, there were good matches and story-telling. Fun was had by all, and all had a good night. There was a different set-up to the Armory this time. A projection screen over the entrance way was a NICE addition. A ringside table was added, and the hard camera was moved in closer. Before the show started, vignettes featuring Revolt members Caleb Konley & Zane Riley played for what seemed like hours. Mason Madox' mom & dad handled concessions (those duties usually performed by Brian Kanabroski's wife).
Seventy-five (75) fans were in attendance at 7:20 pm. The door was open, but it was letting cold air in and not fans. Suddenly, when out on the lawn there arose such a clatter. A bunch of front row regulars did, in fact, come dashing in after the proposed 7:30 bell time. At 7:50 pm, it was time for an unannounced dark match.
A) Tracer X pinned Gil Quest in 6:30. Rating: two stars.... Kevin Pierce was the referee. X rocked Quest with a springboard lariat and exploder suplex. Quest pulled off a standing superplex for a two count. His other big move was a bulldog from high up. However, a dropkick to Tracer's head was not exactly what Quest had in mind. A 450 off the top doomed Quest's quest to win this match.
1) Corey Hollis, 1/2 of the PWX Tag Team Champions, pinned Maddox (Aaron Richie) in 9:18. Rating: 1 3/4 stars.... Mitch Blalock was the referee. New killer attitude for Mason. Hollis' vertical suplex into a turnbuckle hurt me to watch. As fans chanted "Country Jack-off," Hollis was throwing a mean dropkick. MM did not appreciate Hollis' saliva in his face. His tope through the ropes cleared second row ringside. Maddox connected on four consecutive knees in the corner (not five). "MM" could have stood for Mil Mascaras on a springboard flying body press for two counts. Maddox even channeled Chris Jericho on a smooth codebreaker. In the end, Hollis won with a superkick to the side of Maddox' head after aborting a Tornado DDT. Post-match: The Tommy Thomas led cheers for the non-winning Maddox while Mason was getting to his feet. Maddox politely declined Thomas' offers.
2) The Bravados (Harlem & Lancelot) defeated Timmy Lou Retton & "Mad Dog" Josh Powers in 9:28 of an open challenge match. Rating: two stars.... Retton's claim, "Chocolate Pain is taking over," was heard before the bell rang. It ignited a brawl around ringside. Harlem donned a Santa cap and received appropriate chants. The heels took over. Powers in particular has really bulked up in the last year. He ignored the PWX front row (section D?) chants of "who is that"? Retton is quite the character. Powers had to keep making adjustments to a boot. Harlem decimated Retton with a Brogue kick. His somersault plancha over the top rope to both heels received the night's first "PWX" chant. Lancelot & Harlem executed a "Doomsday Device" to Timothy, BUT it was while Harlem was sailing through the ropes. Retton recovered and went up top. He took way too long and ended up being superplexed. The Bravados completed the total victory with a "Gentlemen's Agreement." Post-match: One more time, Retton had to take the Bravados' finisher.
3) Anthony Henry (w/Amber Young) submitted the debuting C.B. Suave in 11:39. Rating: 2 1/2 stars.... Henry felt insulted Suave was propositioning his woman. Meanwhile, Amber was counting the one dollar bills that Suave had dropped. Suave even did the "Rude Awakening." Henry came back to the ring with a rag to towel off Suave's bod. Amber distracted Suave with $$$, so Henry could deck him with a forearm. There was even more fighting over this woman at ringside. A slap fest reddened both men's chests. Henry's sunset-flip power bomb netted another two count. The MMA practitioner even used an old school Gory Special and flung Suave into the turnbuckles. A DDT by Suave had some people wondering if there would be an upset. All for naught, as a running enzuigiri took its toll, and then Henry slapped on the Kimura lock for the submission.
4) The "Modern Day Viking" Gunner (Chad Lail) won via count out over the "Man Scout" Jake Manning (Jake Feuerbach) in 8:51. Rating: 3/4 of a star.... This was a disappointment with a protective finish that no one cared for or about. Charles "Not Mitch" Culler was the referee. The match started outside, as Gunner jumped the fan favorite. Manning obtained the first near fall with a back suplex. Gunner fired right back with a big lariat. Manning has really slimmed down since returning to PWX. Following a flying clothesline, Manning pulled the straps down. A DDT of Gunner also garnered a two count. Gunner called for the end and came spiraling down with a flying headbutt that merely grazed "Man Scout." Manning finally hit the piledriver, and Gunner rolled out. It was an unwise idea for Manning to follow, as Gunner was playing possum. The "Modern Day Viking" rammed Manning back first into the post and beat the count back in. Intermission started and ended later at 9:38 pm.
5) The Revolt (Riley & Konley) defeated heels Rob Killjoy & Lance Lude in 16:22. Rating: two stars.... The Revolt even got streamers. Riley went back to get a stuffed animal, but Killjoy killed it with an elbow drop. KillLude (?) or Ludejoy (?) used some acrobatics to subdue Riley, until the "Party Manimal" laritated them both out of their boots. Killjoy's springboard foot stomp was a two count near-fall. Konley hot-tagged and delivered a "Blue Thunder Bomb" for a two count on Killjoy. Killjoy's exploder suplexing of Konley was another two count. Riley had seen enough and performed a double ballbuster back suplex that you had to see to believe. He was left alone with the heeling duo who flattened him with a double enzuigiri and dropkick. Konley had to save his partner from disaster. Toward the end, the Revolt got even more creative but failed to execute their moves properly. After a failed double piledriver attempt, Lude & Killjoy scored with topes to each Revolt member. Riley finally gave Killjoy a "Death Valley Driver," and Konley finished up with a moonsault. Post-match: Everyone hugged it out, and Riley mentioned Lude & Killjoy would be part of PWX' juniors division.
6) PWX World Heavyweight Champion "The Southern Savior" John Skyler fought to a no contest with #1 contender Ethan Case. Rating: 2 1/2 stars.... As the 10:00 hour passed, Case was confident he would capture the world belt. He began working on Skyler's left leg. Fans looked shocked when Skyler went flying over the top rope to the unforgiving concrete floor. Case put Skyler on the front row (without purchasing a $10 suggested retail price toy) and chopped him hard. His top rope "move of the night" backfired though, as Case belly-flopped back into the ring. Skyler's sentons were not enough to spell the end of Case's title chase. A "Tiger Bomb" by the champion was good for a two count. Case did everything to grapevine Skyler's legs, but the PWX titleholder was too close to the ropes. An awkward struggle up top resulted in Case's hurancanrana-ing Skyler back down to earth. Case's springboard ace crusher brought the crowd to its feet. Skyler scored with a gore on the ring apron. However, when he tried one returning to the ring, Case countered. A huge superkick from Skyler was not the finish. Case blocked his opponent's next superkick and delivered a Superman punch. Gunner & Hollis, Skyler's stablemates, raced to ringside. The distractions allowed Skyler to nail a nutshot & DDT, but Case kicked out. Referee Blalock was tending to Hollis in the corner. Gunner had been escorted out of the ring. Suddenly, when Case seemed to be on the edge of victory, Hollis struck with a diving headbutt to Blalock. The three villains stood over a beaten down Case. The Revolt's music began playing, as all three (Manning, Konley & Riley) squared off with the Xperience. There was still no bell sounding to end this contest. While the six were outside brawling, the two other referees (Pierce & Culler) came out to restore order. Meanwhile, Case disappeared into thin air. The locker room emptied, and it looked like a battle royal. Even George South Sr's trainees joined the fray. After all the jobbers were thrown outside, they waited for Konley to come flying and take out 13 men. Finally Price and Kanabroski appeared on the scene. After 30:55, the announcement was made that the bout had been declared a "no contest." "This is bulls***" chants were heard by young & old ears alike. Skyler remains champion, but Case raced in to steal the belt in what may have actually been the "move of the night."
NOTES: Brett Wolverton & Brad Stutts handled the play by play/commentary. Wolverton also replaced a busy Corky Franks as the ring announcer.... Kanabroski arrived late, as he was detained by career business.... The next PWX show is Sunday, January 10th at Club Label in Charlotte, NC. Bell time is set for 5 pm.
