I actually like the shows at the Civic Center, despite the low ceiling. The smaller venue gives some intimacy for the audience. There's a pretty good crowd forming despite another show happening about 30 miles away. 150 at bell time with more people coming in, standing room only now, I counted 213 before intermission
Peachstate is coming off an almost 2-month long layoff. The last show saw PWA Commissioner Tommy TooMuch turn heel, joining with Marco Wicker in destroying Ben Buchanan in a steel cage. This gives PWA two heel factions, with the other being Matt Hankins' group. PWA seems to work best when strong bad guys are around, i.e., The Exotic Ones and the Kingsmen. PWA needs that with all the new talent that they are bringing in.
Jason Boyd is your ring announcer. Mad Man Mason is your ref.
Jason tries to start the show but immediately interrupted by Matt Hankins. He tells Jason to hit the road, and Jason wasn't happy about it. Hankins cuts a promo about how they were being scorned. He says that Reconstruction has hit a snag in the form of inferior competition. He announces the Shane Marx Invitational Battle Royal to find a worthy individual to challenge Shane Marx for the PWA Heritage Championship. Hankins turns his attention to the No Limits Champion, Ace Haven, and says that Ace hasn't made a title defense in 5 months. He wants Ace to give up the title or defend it now against Brian Blaze
Ace and Amy Haven come out, and he says that he's not giving up anything, and he's going to kick Blaze's ass.
Brian Blaze (with Shane Marx and Matt Hankins) vs. Ace Haven (with Amy Haven) (c) for the PWA No Limits Championship
It looks like someone forgot the bell, oops. Someone improvises real quick. Blaze has a decided size advantage over Ace. Good back and forth match up. Shane and Matt have been ejected from ringside for interference. They get in Boyd's face as they leave. Blaze gets Ace up in the torture rack and submits Ace at 12.22. New No Limits Champion, Brian Blaze. Security has to come out and take Ace to the back. The Reconstruction is getting significant heat, B-
Danny Vegas vs. Sean Nelson
Danny gets a lot of heat from the already upset PWA crowd. They remember him from the last show. Nelson gets a big pop. Danny has some props to use for some old school heat. Humpty Dumpty chants abound. Danny wins at 6:28 after hitting Sean with some nucks that he had hidden from Mason's view. Vegas is working over the crowd post-match. B-.
Boyd brings out The Wicked Nemesis. Wick brings out Orion Bishop. The crowd doesn't know what to make of Bishop. Boyd brings out Bishop's opponent.
Orion Bishop vs. Adrian Jackson
Jackson gets a good pop for his energetic entrance. He hails from the North Carolina area. Bishop is manhandling Jackson early. A major league belly to belly by Orion cuts off a hope spot. Jackson is trying everything to get Orion off of his feet and does so with a power slam and gets a near fall. Bishop catches Jackson in mid-air and plants him for the win at 7:12. Only one section of the crowd really reacted, C+. Despite that grade, I'm looking forward to what both Bishop and Jackson will bring to other matches.
Ethan Alexander Sharpe vs. Clyde Braddock
Ethan is new to PWA. Braddock got the crowd on their feet. Ethan has to take a powder to break Braddock's momentum. Ethan moves, and Clyde posts himself. Ethan is trying to work Clyde's shoulder. Clyde powers Ethan over, and Ethan's legs hit the light fixture on the ceiling fan for a massive pop from the crowd. 9:01.Clyde needs an opponent to really challenge him, C+
--Intermission --
Shane Noles and ?? vs. The Amish Outlaws (Jebediah and Hezekiah with Danny Vegas)
The Outlaws come out with a butter churn and a live chicken. Shane says that his partner was injured earlier in the evening and tells them that they need to warm up the horse-drawn carriage as Shane will beat them 1 on 2. Shane is handling them in the early going, enticing the crowd to chant Dumb and Dumber. The numbers game plays against Shane, and Romeo runs out to the ring and offers to tag in. Shane blows him off, but the Amish Outlaws continue to pound away on him. Shane gets a hope spot and makes the hot tag to Romeo. Romeo takes it to the Outlaws and gets a near fall. Shane blind tags in and they double team the big guy. The smaller guy pulls Romeo out of the ring and tosses him into the barricade. The AO Double team Shane and get the pin at 10:53. They beat down on Shane until Romeo makes the save, folding chair in hand. Shane and Romeo shake hands. Very much a storyline match, B-.
Marco Wicker accompanied to the ring by Mr. (Lamar) Diggs and PWA Commish Tommy TooMuch vs. Buddy Flowers (with Carlos of The Pineapple Express)
The Express is over with the crowd, mostly by them tossing bags of snacks out into the audience. Flowers blows some smoke into Marco's face, and it causes Marco to stagger around the ring, Some comedy bits ensue, including a "tuning into Tokyo" spot. Marco turns things back to the serious side. Mr. Diggs is standing right in front of an audience member, just staring them down. Tommy is getting his licks in whenever Mason has his back turned. The crowd is chanting for Bull Buchanan. Marco takes his eyes off of his opponent, and Flowers rolls him up for the win at 8:10. Some good stuff in the match leading to the closing segment, B+.
Tommy, Marco, and Diggs begin to destroy the PE. TooMuch is on the mic. He says that everyone has been messaging him asking him why he did what he did to Ben Buchanan. He says that it has zero to do with Ben. He lays into the crowd, singling out a few of the regular fans. For 2 years, he's been trying to make things great in Peachstate, but these fans have been calling him names, and he decided if you can beat them, join them. He calls Mason back into the ring and tells him to restart the match because Flowers had cheated. Diggs splashes onto Flowers, and Mason counts the pin for Marco.
Ben and Bull Buchanan come in from the front door and get into the ring, chasing off Too Much's crew.
Ben and Bull Buchanan come in from the front door and get into the ring, chasing off Too Much's crew.
Ben's on the mic. Says that they won't put their hands on them tonight. Bull's on the mic and says that the crowd are his fans and friends. He says that he's not a licensed wrestler, and if he puts his hands on Tommy, Bull will go to jail. He says that Tommy's the booker, but he's not the owner. He says that Tommy won't get in the cage with him. Bull wants the crowd to contact the owners and let them know that the fans want to see Tommy in a cage match with Bull. He wants the fans every time they see Tommy. They need to chant cage match. Bull says that he's now a licensed wrestler and contracted with Peachstate. He dares Tommy to make matches. Tommy responds that the booker's signature is needed for that contract. He makes a prop for them, Feb is the Shane Marx invitational battle royal. He will allow both Buchanans to enter the battle royal, and if Bull wins, Tommy will sign him to a contract. Bull wants to know about the cage match. Tommy says to worry about the other men in the battle royal. Bull says that he will get Tommy in the cage and will beat the sh!t out of him. That popped the crowd. That was some intense stuff.
Final Thoughts: This show surprised just about everyone, from the crowd to the staff, to the people in the back. They were expecting between 130-150 due to a two-month layoff and posters that had everyone on it, and no matches announced. The crowd's insanity level was rising throughout the night. The guys from North Carolina did a bang up job.
The official title for the February show is: Matt Hankins presents the Shane Marx Invitational Battler Royal featuring Brian Blaze and co-starring Card Subject to Change.
Speaking of the February show, it will be in Bremen, Ga, at the Activities and Rec Center. The dates will be the 1st or the 15th, depending on the basketball schedule. The VFW Fairgrounds are undergoing renovations that will see HVAC units installed and 6 months worth of concerts booked to pay for that.
