Live from New Realm Brewery in Atlanta, Deep South Wrestling presented the culmination of almost 14 months of big shows with “No Escape”! Many great matches all capped off by a Barbed Wire Cage match for the Heavyweight Title! Announced attendance: 767 people, 8 dogs, a horse, a snake and a bearded dragon (even nature cannot miss this show folks).
Match 1: Hitman For Hire v Mark Davidson
Davidson is known internationally as a super quick and agile performer and Hitman for Hire gave him all he had. Davidson maintained control throughout and won over the crowd almost instantly. The masked Hire even tried some underhanded tactics only to have those efforts thwarted by Davidson’s vast array of maneuvers.
Winner: Mark Davidson
Takeaway: The crowd really enjoyed what Mark brings to the ring and Hire did well in playing off of his opponent. Mark was originally set to face Luka Daniels, however Luka sustained an injury the night before so that match will have to wait. Spoke to Mark the day after the show and he stated clearly he did not want this to be his only match in DSW.
Match 2: CT Entertainment v Najasism
Teacher vs Student as Naja spent some time working with CT in his training. This one was fast and high energy throughout. Naja with the quickest strikes in the game currently only to have CT find windows to get the advantage. CT had this match in the bag however his ego got in the way as he taunted Najasism and showboated to the crowd allowing “The Greatest, The Baddest, The Best” to hit the torpedo spear for the 1,2,3.
Winner: Najasism
Takeaway: Finding people who can compete on a quick, athletic level with Naja are few and far between. CT did a good job of keeping pace and staying in this contest. With Luka injured, CT could look to move into that open heel role with Deep South where he could really evolve.
Match 3: Ryan Rembrandt v “The Boozerweight” Matt Sells
The classic wrestler in RR vs the crowd favorite Sells featured Sells with the early advantage. It went a little sideways when he offered to split a beverage with Rembrandt who not-so-politely declined causing the Boozerweight to blast him with a liquid face wash. Ryan was able to hold Sells down a bit and looked to seize victory late. Then Sells digs into his vast bag of moves and seals the win.
Winner: Matt Sells
Takeaway: Crowd really enjoys the unorthodox move set and antics of the Boozerweight. Plus, Rembrandt had a solis showing versus a crowd favorite.
Eric Adamz and Nick Patrick come to the ring and invite the roster to join them at ringside. The announcement is made that in the Fall, DSW will be expanding into further surrounding states PLUS will be streaming Pay-Per-View LIVE from Atlanta!
Takeaway: HUGE news from the company that continues to put on massively exciting show after massively exciting show! Expect even more big things soon.
Match 4: Apollo Prince v DJ Smoke (2 out of 3 Falls to be #1 contender to the Heavyweight Title)—These two picked up right where they left off last month trading big moments and momentum swings. Fall 1 went to Smoke who used his speed and agility advantage to roll up Prince. Fall 2 was all Apollo who chucked DJ back first into the ring post on the outside and the high flyer could not beat the 10 count. The contest picked up tremendously shortly after Smoke found the ring and a back and forth showcase kept the fans going crazy! The finale occurred when Smoke attempted a top rope takedown of Prince who countered into his trademark Last Ride Power-bomb from the top rope, ending DJ’s chance at the next title shot.
Winner: Apollo Prince
Takeaway: Everything and more you would expect from two opponents who have squared off six previous times. Not sure where Smoke goes from here, however Prince has a main event in his future.
Match 5: Rose Gold v Gemma Jewels (w/ Ray the Entertainer)
For two ladies who are both known to do whatever it takes to win (legal or not), Rose and Gemma had a relatively clean match. Gold found ways to best Jewels, yet the Bombshell fired back with artillery of her own. Rose was close to smelling victory until her partner in crime Nathaniel Vanderbilt made a surprise walk down the entranceway, distracting Rose and allowing Gemma to snatch the win (possibly with the help of the ring ropes).
Winner: Gemma Jewels
Takeaway: Another impressive tally in the win column for Jewels. Ray made a moment of his own post-match when he grabbed a giant hat from a ringside fan and proceeded to prance around with it before jetting to the back. Referee Richie did retrieve the hat and returned it to the fan shortly thereafter. Bigger story here is what Vanderbilt and Rose have going on that cost her the match.
Match 6: MAIN EVENT: Jacob Johnson vs Skrilla the Great (c-Heavyweight Championship: Barbed wire Cage
Depending on when you choose to start the story, this is the culmination of 1-2 or more years of a great rivalry between former faction members. Both men traded fast and furious blows early on with neither finding much of an edge on the other. Skrilla used his big moment experience to take over punishing Johnson for a bit, utilizing the cage as a means to break down his foe. Not long after though Jacob seemed to turn a switch, suddenly building up through the cheers or the roaring crowd who wanted him to succeed almost as much as he did for himself. Now it was Johnson’s turn to introduce the face of the champ into every side of their enclosure! Skrilla recovered and landed a Skrill-Ride only to have JJ kick out at TWO! A few more kick-outs from both competitors lead to Jacob finally catching Skrilla in not one, nor two but THREE World’s Strongest Slams for the championship clinching win!
Winner (and NEW Deep South Wrestling Heavyweight Champion): Jacob Johnson
Takeaway: What a moment for Johnson who smiled for the rest of the night while posing for pictures and talking to all fans who he ran across. For the better part of a year, it felt as though he may never get a chance at Skrilla and even the few times he did, things never lined up (mostly to outside interference). Now he looks toward new #1 Contender Apollo Prince for his first defense. Skrilla is rumored to be taking a small sabbatical and should return just a bit up the road to his new oath as the former 2-time Deep South champ. DSW is now in the Jacob Johnson Era and we shall see what new challenges and excitement that brings.
