Deep South Wrestling returned to it’s new home base at New Realm Brewery on Sunday to a raucous crowd that only grew after a couple bouts with Mother Nature!
Match 1: DJ Smoke V. CT Entertainment—
The opening contest starts quickly with Smoke using his speed and CT using his elusiveness to evade the fast attacks. DJ had a counter almost every time CT found a new attack. Entertainment used as many clubs in his bag of tricks as he could to establish control only to have Smoke ground him and find himself perched on the top rope. Seconds later came the DJ Remix Frog Splash and the notch in the win column for Smoke!
Takeaway: These two have developed quite a quick rivalry in recent months and have build a solid continuity that shines each time they lock up. CT’s mic skills are always on point and this was an excellent choice to open the card. Look for more with these two super athletes soon.
Match 2: Professor Pain (w CDub) V Ryan Rembrandt (w Ray the Entertainer)—
No sooner had Professor and Rembrandt entered the ring, the skies opened up to dump the crowd with their first shower of the afternoon. After a quick 8 minute delay, they finally locked up and away we go! Early jockeying for position as the classic skills of Double R squared up with the powerful mat maneuvers of Pain. Rembrandt relied on his cunning ability to thwart Pain’s power throw attempts, giving Ryan control for the time. Then Pain found his footing and had Double R flying around the ring via textbook suplexes and heavy strikes only a Professor can perform. The side battle outside the ring between managers CDub and Ray only accented the amazing action in the ring. In the end, knowledge wins as Professor takes Rembrandt to school and gets the victory!
Takeaway: Rembrandt is slowly building a great reputation for being a great hand in the ring and the crowd seems to really enjoy his work each time out. Watching the evolution of Professor Pain has been a fantastic journey in just a short time and he just gets better every time.
Match 3: SpiRal V. Najasism (Knockout or Submission)—
Overall match up number three between “The Bosnian Warchild” and “The Greatest, The Baddest, The Best”. Each one has gotten more physical and this was no exception. The second and final shower from Mother Nature did not deter competitor not ringside fan. To be as wet as it was everywhere, Naja and Spi-Ral went back and forth with every strike, kick, hold and submission they could muster. Spi-Ral found great success with his spin kicks and intensity. Naja responded with cerebral counters and impressive kicks of his own. The match appeared wrapped up as Spi-Ral applied a top level Jujitsu level Kimora armbar with a uber tight body lock. The crowd sensed the end and rallied behind Najasism. He felt the support and broke from the hold while catch Spi-Ral in his own version of the Scorpion Deathlock! After many tries by the Warchild to find the ropes or break free, he relented to fight another day and tapped the canvas.
Takeaway: Has to be a match of the year candidate. Forget the weather and this was still one of the best overall matches in a long time. Both will probably move on to other opponents, but any time you see them on a card…it’s a must watch.
Match 4: Grayson Pierce V. Mark Davidson—
The return of Grayson was followed with boos from the crowd as he announced that his opponent had missed his flight and would not be there for the show. He instructed the official to start counting Davidson out so he could get his win and leave.
As the official’s count gets to around 6…HIS music hits. It’s SKRILLA the Great! The crowd got SO loud then realized he was smiling and high fiving everyone!
Action finally gets under way and it’s Grayson on the high paced offense that is actually keeping Skrilla off balance a small bit early on. Then here comes “The Great One” with the offense of his own. Pierce with some underhanded tactics to once more gain advantage only to have the former two-time champ reverse his fortunes. This ultimately leads to Grayson taking a masterful Skrill-Ride and Skrilla the Great’s return is completed with the victory!
Takeaway: Grayson looked good coming back from an injury that left him on the sidelines while Deep South has been rolling big time. Efforts like this and he’ll find his place on the train to be pretty favorable. The legit POP of the crowd when Skrilla’s music hit was one of the loudest moments I’ve witnessed in a long time. Fans wanted to (and sometimes did) cheer the former champ during his title run. Now they got the chance and we could see STG with a Face run in the near future.
*Drew Dickinson welcomes Apollo Prince to ringside. Apollo sporting a nice crown as he tells Drew and the fans how whether it’s Jacob Johnson or Lamar Diggs who wins the title later, he is taking it from them.
Takeaway: This is the most I have ever heard Prince speak, and it was a masterful promo. Said all he needed to, got his points across and even played off of the crowd who chanted random things and yelled out while he was speaking. Shout out to Drewski as well for playing his part by keeping the conversation moving and knowing when to let Apollo take it to higher places.
Main Event: Jacob Johnson (Heavyweight Champion) V. Lamar Diggs (Street Fight)—Before the music can hit, Eric Adamz is at ringside with an announcement: Lamar Diggs will not be in the match tonight. Instead Chad Skywalker has stepped up to challenge Johnson for the DSW Title!
Jacob Johnson (C) V Chad Skywalker—
If you thought two enemies will stop at nothing to go home with the Biggest Prize, watching two friends go at it was on another level. Jacob with the early advantage as he used his strength upside to keep Skywalker from running around much. The Chad finds his rhythm and its his turn to keep Johnson on his heels (and back) with his unique onslaught of speed and flying abilities. Action spills to the outside where a road sign, a crutch and multiple beverages were used to dismantle each other leading to a few hard slams onto a nearby picnic table. After slamming Johnson onto the table, Skywalker had his familiar smirk on his face before climbing up the the top rope. After gathering his nerves and talking himself more into it, Chad leaped from the top rope to splash Johnson on the table! The crowd was going wild after that and as the wrestlers scrambled back into the ring, the fans thought they may be seeing the end of Jacob’s reign along with the start of Chad’s. A few close two counts then Johnson finds the strength for a World’s Strongest Slam on Skywalker for the 3 count and title defense number two in his short run as champ so far!
Takeaway: As much as another battle between Johnson and Diggs might have been, the quick substitution of Skywalker i to the match was great. Chad has been on the cusp of greatness and a top tier level performance and this was very much that. Johnson with another amazing match as well.
This night proved that: 1) the depth in DSW is quite deep 2) they are running super hot AND 3) if a show has two downpours yet MORE people show up to watch during them…you really have something special.
