From Scott Hensley:
I
would estimate about 400 people were there. The gym probably could have
squeezed in another 200 though as there was ample seating available.
Robert Gibson, George South, Doug Somers, and Thunderbolt Patterson had merch tables set up. Somers was looking sharp in a nice suit but has this sort of blank stare that makes me wonder if he is still all there. That may just be the way he always looks though because he looks like that on some t-shirts he had for sale that have him as a cartoon character and say "The Original old school" "Pretty Boy" Doug Sommers. Ranger Ross joined Somers and Patterson(who was wearing some really baggy sweatpants tucked into cowboy boots) for a while at their table. Randy Rose sat near the merchandise tables and is still rocking a short, curly mullet.
1) Cousin Cletus(from North Georgia) outlasted 15 other competitors to win the annual Nightmare rumble. Other competitors were Havoc, Convict Blade, Bam Bam, Dave Diamond, Knight, Lee Thomas, Jamie Holmes, Torque, Chris Nelms, Jagged Edge, Shane Marx, Nemesis, Russian Assassin, Awesome TC, and Joey Idol. Final four were Cletus, Russian Assassin, Awesome TC, and Joey Idol. Referees for this match were Mac McMurray, Charlie Smith, Bobby Simmons, and Scrappy McGowan
The annual rumble started about 7:15 and had some pretty laughable spots of guys basically putting themselves out. Nothing of note here, just a bunch of guys in the ring all at the same time dumping each other over the top rope. I believe Chris Nelms actually just jumped up to put his body on the top rope so someone would throw him out - looked terrible. Jagged Edge got on the apron and proclaimed no one could throw him out, which someone hit him from behind to eliminate him. Lee Thomas walked around the ring more than he was inside of the ring. I was surprised at the final 4 being Russian Assassin(Georgia edition), Joey Idol, Awesome TC(who I didn't find very awesome...), and Cousin Cletus. Cletus was over with the crowd but he was also probably the biggest and oldest guy in the ring so we'll just say his veteran expertise and body mass gave him an advantage...
Scrappy McGowan has "Gallagher" Hair that looks like big dog ears hanging down on the side. Here's a picture I found on the internet that kinda does me description justice but at the same time doesn't because you can't see the hair flopping around.
2) In a 3 way tag elimination match - Dixie Dynamite (Billy Jack & Billy Knight) w/ P'Nut Black d. Billy Black & Buddy Burke w/ Mike Golden by DQ when an unknown individual(that's what the person was announced as) hit Dixe Dynamite with a cowbell. Bobby Hayes & Iceberg w/ Jackie Rosedale were also eliminated earlier in the match with Buddy Burke lit a fireball in the face of Bobby Hayes when the referee had his back turned.
This was a mess. I love Iceberg and Bobby Hayes but I love them as menacing, tough guys - not the walk around and hug people, smiling babyfaces like they were in this match but it may have been because they were the only two likable people in the ring. I've never seen a match with so many managers either... or people named Billy. There were just way too many people in and outside of the ring and everything felt cluttered and confusing here without anything to really capture attention except for Buddy Burke's fire paper "fireball" to Bobby Hayes and then "an unknown individual" hitting one of the Dixie Dynamite guys with a cowbell. Mike Golden came to the ring with Buddy Burke and Billy Black but he left to go talk to people so someone else that was never named grabbed a cowbell for the finish I assume. Just a cluster of a match.
3) George South, Beau James, and Misty James d. Pretty Boy Floyd, Russian Assassin, and Sabrina w/ Jason Valentine in a mixed 6 man tag
The heels worked over Misty, causing Beau and George to try to come in to save her, only to be stopped by the referee. Too much going on in this match, as well. Beau James has what I'm going to call a "rolling bump" where instead of falling on his back, his legs just sorta fold up under him as he slowly rolls to the ground. I respect the fact that for an extremely un-athletic looking guy he has earned the respect of a lot of veterans in the business but his in-ring work just does nothing to impress me. The ladies tried hard here but just had a lot of miscommunication as well. I'm sure the people in this match can say they were telling a story and following psychology but the story I was being told was that 7 people were at ringside going in and out over and over to the excitement of very few.
I think due to the amount of people in the first few matches and the lack of actual 1 on 1 ring work without distractions was wearing on people at this point but the Nightmare Ted Allen was a friendly guy who wrestled for many years and had many friends so it shouldn't be surprising that so many guys want to come out to pay their respects and not all of them are going to work a style that I find entertaining.
A "Legends Walk" was held with Legends and Special Guests coming to ringside. Legends in attendance included Bull Buchanan, Thunderbolt Patterson, Ranger Ross, Doug Somers, Robert Gibson, Cowboy Bob Kelly, George South, Steve Lawler, Grizzly Boone, John Michaels, Greg Brown, Bobby Simmons, Mac McMurray, Charlie Smith, Scrappy McGowan, Joyce Grable, Fredrick Avery, James Bryant, Jimmy Powell, Burger Powell, Nasty Critter #1, Randy Rose, Mr Olympia Jerry Stubbs, Scott East, Mike Golden, Randal Brown, Interns' Bill Bowman, Famous Infernos' Curtis Smith, Jay West, Beau James, Misty James, Sabrina, and a few more
Once the guests were at ringside, Big Bill Dromo's family was called to the ring. WWE Hall of Famer "Bullet" Bob Armstrong came out to present the family with a Lifetime Achievement award, saying that Dromo had really been a mentor to him. Next up, fellow WWE Hall of Famer Ron Simmons came out and gave a very heartfelt speech about how great the Armstrong family was and how he felt like he was an honorary member of their family. He presented a Lifetime Achievement Award to Bob Armstrong for Brad Armstrong, whom Bob said was the best wrestler among all the Armstrongs without a doubt.
I loved the presentation of the Lifetime Achievement awards. Bob Armstrong and Ron Simmons were very genuine in their giving and receiving of the awards. The Dromo family was very appreciative as well. I'm not sure there's anyone more thankful and humbled to be in the WWE Hall of Fame than Bob Armstrong.
4) In Steve Lawler's retirement match - Steve Lawler & Grizzly Boone w/ John Michaels and JP Walker d. PYT(Fredrick Avery & James Bryant) w/ Phil Hefner
This match was extremely light and also just had a lot going on. JP Walker was announced as a Southern Rock legend but I'm not sure who he is and he came out with Steve then left. I did find it entertaining that John Michaels ended up beating Phil Hefner down with his own briefcase outside of the ring. The crowd of course just wanted to see Steve's hand raised one more time and they got that. Steve thanked everyone and his brother Terry Lawler.
5) Stupid w/ Tweey d. Frankie Valentine, Brandon Collins, Chris Lightning, Kody Jack, Jason Collins, Josh Storm, and Chris Ganz in an 8 man cruiserweight elimination match
Kudos to the booker for building the card in terms of work rate so that as the night went on, the wrestling didn't slow down and cause tired people to lose interest. This match had some entertaining stuff, including several 4 on 4 mirroring spots to begin with where all the baby faces were paired off doing the same thing to all the heels at the same time. Im a big fan of Jason and Brandon Collins. They've come a long way in the few years that I've seen them work; and they really bring an excitement to the ring. Frankie Valentine and Stupid were the final two. Frankie is a fantastic wrestler and I really have nothing bad at all to say about Stupid here either. He got good heat and won with feet on the ropes.
6) Chip Day & Corey Hollis d. So Fine Mafia (Epic Grant Mitchell & Brad Lynch)
This match was good despite Hollis being banged up from winning the Pro Wrestling Evolution tournament on Friday night. The crowd was tired but woke back up after these guys pulled out some hard-hitting back and forth action. I really prefer Day & Hollis as heels but they have such a passion to their work that it's hard not to cheer for them.
A LONNNNG raffle was held as well as an intermission where most of the locker room and a lot of fans ended up leaving as it approached 11pm.
7) Kyle Matthews d. Shaun Tempers
I expected this to be match of the night and I really believe it was. They worked hard and Tempers is so obnoxious in the ring that a person just has to root for his opponent, who in this case is quite possibly the best wrestler in the state of Georgia. They worked a match that combined technical with hard-hitting and high flying. Great main event and I know Ted would be very proud of both of these guys.
