From RobBrod:
Georgia Premier Wrestling presents Winter Wonder Slam
My first visit to GPW in several years, venues, and owners, and my first time in the city of Jasper as well, very quaint from
what I could see with the setting sun. GPW has set up in the home of an old
food market of some type as there are some checkout belts near the front door. When
the kids run across the floor I can feel the vibrations in my seat. Not ragging
on the venue, just different. Wished my bed vibrated this much.
The talent roster here have some people I’m used to seeing
(Matt Sells, Vary Morales, Parker Li) and some that are not familiar to me. GPW
is one of the promotions that Nightmare Factory students regularly will come to
for reps.
Referees are Paul Santa, Lewis Santiago, and Wes Fox. Ring
Announcer is Liam Patrick.
103 paid at the GPW Arena with a bunch of under 5 y/o’s running around.
1st match: Michael Allen Richard Clark vs. ½ GPW Tag Champs Trevor Blackwell
Clark hails from Canada and grabbed the mic from Patrick, runs down the crowd, Georgia, and the USA in general and will bless the crowd with the singing of the Canadian National Anthem. Clark’s warbling gets interrupted by the riffs of Ozzy’s Crazy Train to the delight of the crowd. Not familiar with either men: Clark’s a body guy and you can tell he’s from Canada by his lack thereof. Blackwell’s not as muscular but has the rocker hair style. Clark tries to out wrestle Blackwell, doesn’t go well and he retreats out of the ring, Blackwell follows. Blackwell tries a baseball slide, Clark traps him in the ring skirt and pounds away. Power moves by Clark with some posing in between moves.
Clark tries for a vertical suplex, Blackwell turns it into a
neck breaker and the comeback is on. Nice monkey flip sets up a back body drop
for a near fall. Clark suplexes Blackwell while standing on the middle rope,
nice. A swinging side slam nets Blackwell the win at 7:35.
Well done, IMO.
2nd match: The Business (KC Rocker and Caleb
Teninty) vs. Tom Marciano and HellBent Trent, collectedly known as Moose
Knuckle Madness.
The Business continues to make friends where ever they go. All
four are fairly new in the game, the Business have more experience, I believe. Rocker
and Trent start, Rocker goes for some
shenanigans early, doesn’t work well for him. Things break down on the floor
and that’s where the Business picks up. The jokes write themselves. Trent
taking the brunt of the punishment with Rocker and Teninty making the quick
tags. Trent reverses a suplex for a hope spot, but Rocker lures Marciano in
distract the ref. The ref prevents a pin due to Teninty not being the legal
man. This creates the hope spot and hot tag to Marciano and he’s fired up. Dual
airplane spins on the Business , and Marciano follows up with an inverted DDT. Things
go cock-eyed from there, everyone takes big moves from the next person.
Marciano was the last man standing and decides to go up top, Rocker grabs the
leg and crotches him. Business give Marciano the business with a spike
piledriver then stereo superkicks for the win at 11:41.
The Business is the best tag team in Georgia as per Caleb
Teninty, whilst screaming it in my ear as they leave to the back.
3rd match: Vary Morales vs. Parker Li.
Li’s the popular pick in this crowd, Vary’s his usual
bad-boy, too cool for school self. Up-tempo will be the name of the game here,
well, more Lucha style, what do I know. What I do know is that bodies are
flying everywhere to the delight of the crowd. Li does some jumping rope spring
board thing to send Vary out of the ring. Vary catches him when Li tries to
follow up and they are fighting out on the floor, Li taking the brunt of this,
the guy in the seat where Vary kicked Li in the face wasn’t expecting that when
he came to the show.
Vary smacks Li in the head with a water bottle, that got a
fan to take some steps in Vary’s direction, guess it was her water. Delayed
suplex from Vary, lackadaisical cover and Li kicks out. Li tries to fire back
but eats a drop kick to the mush. Vary goes up top but Li meets him up there.
They fight and Li gets knock down. Vary continues the punishment with the crowd
urging Li on. Vary’s got a chair and brings it into the ring. Ref Santiago
grabs it and Li tries to take advantage, but Vary’s too good for that. Vary’s
up top calling for the elbow, he leaps and Li catches him for an atomic drop. Li
fires up and takes it to Vary and hits a tilt-a-whirl backbreaker then bulldog
for a near fall. Li plants Vary with a
delayed suplex of his own for another near fall. Li’s face meets Vary’s elbow
and foot. Massive kicks to the chest of Li, Li catches one and punches Vary
down. Li throws Vary off and on the rebound, plants Vary with a cutter for the
win at 14:48.
Good stuff. Both men are showing the welts from some of
those shots.
Intermission.
4th match: Trevor Terry Vs. Jimmy Wild
Wild offers his hand, Terry uses it as a towel rack, Wild
wipes his pits and throws the towel back in Terry’s face. Terry uses
shenanigans to take over after Wild’s initial offense. Not familiar with either
guy, both have similar thin build and height. Terry’s more of a fair haired guy
who’s skin will burn if he’s out in the sun for 30 seconds. Wild’s a bit more
swarthy with longer hair. Wild wins with a whirling powerbomb at 5:42.
Not bad at all, a couple of miss-steps but nothing major.
5th match: Levi Knight vs. Matthew DiMartino.
Again, not familiar with these guys. Knight’s got a disco
theme look and hair going on, DiMartino’s a bit shorter and is rocking a thinner,
lean, gymnast build than Knight. Shenanigans by Knight, he often pauses and
flips his red hair around. Knight has some good moves and has a vicious streak
under that party style of his. They start trading some haymakers, DiMartino
lands some other strikes to stagger Knight along with a DDT for a near fall. DiMartino
goes up top, he leaps, Knight moves out of the way and kicks DiMartino in the
face for a near fall. DiMartino fires back and lands a top rope Senton while
dodging the fire sprinkler pipes for the win at 8:01.
Main Event: Warden vs. The Rock-n-Roll Model Matt “Sex”
Sells.
The crowd hates Warden and loves Sells. Sells has a beer bandolier
with several cans of Lite in them and he drinks two of them while on his way to
the ring; the crowd is drinking it up, figuratively speaking of course. Warden’s
pissed at all of this, of course. Sells gives a ringside fan a lap dance. The
ref says one more sip, the crowd is chanting chug, and chug it is. Sells blows
himself up marching around the ring and then collar and elbows the ref. We
finally get a tie up between Warden and Sells, Sells gets thrown down and takes
another sip. Usual Sells shenanigans on Warden, sending Warden out of the ring.
Sells follows, raking the back of Warden, spitting some beer in his face, and throwing
Warden’s head on top of the trash can. Sells tries for a suplex out on the
floor, Warden blocks it and they continue to fight. Sells waffles the back of
Warden with a chair; Ref Santiago’s being very lenient here. Back in the ring,
Sells wants to and does rat trap the head of Warden, rolls it over and gets a
near fall. Palm strike coming up, Warden catches it and then head butts Sells.
A little kid in the crowd is laying into Warden, great
stuff. Sells tries for a sunset flip, doesn’t go well. Warden picks his nose
and then shoves the finger into Sells’ mouth. Warden lands 2 elbow drops, but
Sells rolls out from a third. Sells tries to fire up but gets chopped down. Sells
striking back and nails a middle rope springboard cutter for a near fall. Face
breaker/neck breaker combo by Sells leads to two Jushin Thunder Lager palm
strikes which staggers the big man but doesn't knock him down. Warden plants Sells and falls down
on top of Sells for the three-count at 14:11.
Warden on the mic, claiming to be the best wrestler here. Warden
wants the GPW championship. The champ wasn’t here tonight due to illness, but
he wants Showtime at the next show. Warden turns around and into a stunner from
Sells to pop the crowd. Sells on the mic and wishes everyone a merry and happy
holiday season and sends them home happy.
Final Thoughts:
A pretty good entertaining show. Match times were
decently done, nothing overstayed the welcome, IMO.
Not knowing any storylines going can sometimes be a
bother as I don’t know the who, what, where, when, and whys of a particular
promotion. Wasn’t really the case here as it seems only the main event had some
storyline purposes behind it and that was explained in the after match promos.
Speaking of promos, Warden is usually not on the mic. He
was tonight cutting a pretty decent promo. Keep it up, big man.
All these guys (and gals) coming through the NF, starting
to think we need those football videos where they state their name and what
class.
One of the best matches I’ve seen out of Parker Li to
date. Working with Vary didn’t hurt in the slightest.
Vary is underrated, IMO. His size has been used against
him in the past, but he’s put out some bangers with guys much larger than he
is.
