From Jeff Richards:
"Back to Brookford"
Apple City Championship Wrestling
Brookford Town Hall
Saturday August 19
Following a 15 year absence, the tiny town of Brookford, NC hosted a professional wrestling show this past Saturday. The former school auditorium was packed with 200 fans to see the debut in Catawba County of Apple City Championship Wrestling (ACCW). Chances are great this fledgling group will return based on positive feedback.
Owner Blake Coffey applied his trade in promoting and marketing this show to the greater Hickory metropolitan area. Multiple mentions on local radio and in newspaper helped wrestling fans to find this event and where to park.
This was the group's sixth event since Coffey, who formerly wrestled as Nik Nitro, took over and rebranded this Alexander County mainstay. One hundred seats were set up for ringside and sold. Two projection screens and fog machines were utilized. Two four-can light pedestals were mounted, even though one bulb was burned out. Thirteen sponsors were acknowledged.
(1) Rob Killjoy pinned Jay Malachi in 13:08. Both babyfaces had their legion of fans. Killjoy wanted the crowd to move so he could crash and burn, but it was Malachi who landed in the second row. "Quack" tried to pin Malachi out of a Gori Special to no avail. Killjoy scored with a flip dive, drank some Aquafina, and spit on his opponent. Malachi feined a chop and gave Killjoy a Bang that would have made DDP proud. Killjoy kicked out of a reverse rana and hit Hirooki Goto's Ushigoroshi finisher. Rating: 3 1/4 stars
(2) Kay Holiday surprised local favorite Mike Levy in 7:45. Holiday portrays a heel character here than in His Pro Wrestling (HPW) days. Levy resembles a mini Bastion Booger. He makes up for his shortcomings in the ring with lots of charisma. Holiday scored early with a uranage. Levy kicked out of an STO. Holiday landed a discus lariat and a big swift kick to the gonads before a knee put away fan favorite Levy. Rating: 1 star
(3) Whiskey Business (Jonny Ryda & Brayden Marshall) upset fans with a victory over Caleb Konley & Suicide in 11:52. Wait, Konley was teaming with himself? No, it was Cameron Jackson on this particular night. "Revolt" partner Zane Riley had to be replaced due to his AEW commitments (hauling the ring? working a gimmick table?). Jackson had Suicide's mannerisms down to a T. A double octopus by the good guys momentarily halted Whiskey Business' business. There was heat on the masked guy until Konley received the hot tag. And with just two side doors open, it was truly a HOT tag. A double plancha wiped out Ryda & Marshall. The WB sprayed Konley with a liquid and hit its finisher on him for the win. Rating: 2 3/4 stars
(4) The debuting Airica Demia pinned Kasey Fox in 9:29. Demia was accompanied by a male valet (her real-life dad Chris Solar). ACCW played an ultra-long video for Demia that received some "boring" jeers. Fox surprisingly turned heel. The normal fan favorite falls well, but this bout was, well, bowling shoe ugly. Demia has seven months' experience but shows much more potential than Fox, who has been on all six ACCW shows. Fox planted Demia with an X-factor, but the super heroine kicked out. Her "Natural Selection" maneuver, though, missed. Demia gave Fox a Supergirl punch and told her to go back to wrestling school. Rating: 1/2 star
(5) Buggy Wright retained the 64-90 Championship with a victory over former champ Kay O'Mari in 16:22. The title is named after two highways which run through Alexander County. Several fans missed much of this encounter by going outside to smoke, buying concessions, etc. An intermission was sorely needed after the women's matchup. Buggy's Sliced Bread #2 could have won it, but Wright needed a respite. Wright's DVD nailed a two count. O-Mari's codebreaker broke up Wright's Lethal Injection attempt. O'Mari carried this stuffed bear to ringside, and when he left it there, you just knew it was coming into play. Wright soared with a second Lethal Injection attempt, but O'Mari and the bear kicked out. O'Mari's Sister Abigail almost won the youngster his belt back. Then O'Mari went up top for a frog splash, but the champion kicked out. O-Mari's hissy fit was a great comedic moment. On the third try, it was Wright's Lethal Injection which did in the challenger. Rating: 3 1/4 stars
Intermission ensued, and Austin Aries was announced as appearing at the next ACCW show back home in Hiddenite, NC.
(6) All Worm No Soul (Brady Collins & Chris Ford) defeated and retained the ACCW Tag Team Championships over Fist 2 Cuffs at the 16 minute mark. I did not catch the Fists' names, so we will go with Bald Guy and Guy with Hair. Note: the challengers need new gear. All Worm display a Midnight Rockers' mentality. Collins is considerably taller than Ford. A double jump moonsault by Collins was broken up by Guy with Hair. Collins took out a chair in the second row. Brookford will be charging for that chair. Ford took the hot tag and ran wild. All Worm show off a bunch of offense. A black hole slam by Bald Guy and a piledriver by Guy with Hair stunned All Worm Little Selling. What did in the Fist2cuffs was a huracanrana by Ford and a wild shooting star press by Collins. Rating: 3 stars
(7) Lucky Ali received a reversed decision over Cam Jackson (working twice) in 13:37. #upnext Ali appeared last year on New Japan Strong's television show. Ali kicked out of a Jim Brunzellesque dropkick. He put on one of Kasey Fox' blinking pink hats and stormed around the ring. Jackson delivered the first backdrop of the night. CJ worked over Ali's left hand. Jackson pulled off a spinebuster and began looking for the People's elbowdrop (two count only). Cam went up top, but Ali hid behind the ref. Ali pulled out a tampon, but Jackson slugged him instead. CJ reversed an O'Connor roll for the apparent pin, but Ali had slipped the disposable object in Jackson's trunks. After Ali complained, the referee asked Jackson to look, and a disappointing finish was seen by all. Rating: 2 1/2 stars
(8) Apple City Champion Bobby Fish (sans belt) won over former champion Thomas Extreme in 14:13 to retain. Fish is sporting a shaved head nowadays. The former Reddragon member cut a promo beforehand. "Nobody forgot the belt," snarled Fish, who stated the championship was "mysteriously missing." Pointing at Extreme, Fish wanted everyone to chant "he's a thief." I was chanting "get this started." Once the match ensued, matwork was predominant. Fish pulled out a Swanton into a rear naked choke. The contest was very methodical, unlike anything else seen on the show. Extreme endured the second backdrop on the night. A dragonscrew leg whip delivered by Fish looked painful. After wrestling a gi away from Extreme, referee Gene Parry missed Fish getting fouled. Extreme hit a frogsplash elbowdrop, but Fish floundered away. Fish exploder-suplexed Extreme into the ropes, and then a big kick by the champ ended Extreme's night. Rating: 1 3/4 stars
Notes: Podcaster extraordinaire Garrett Moore was right on the money when he proclaimed O'Mari a future star. Bouncing back from a serious automobile accident, O'Mari flashes future stardom... Malachi was set to debut for CWF Mid-Atlantic before the Burlington, NC promotion closed down... Nitro introduced the show and welcomed everyone back from intermission... The show started 20 minutes late, as Levy was waiting for all of his gear to arrive.
