Here are a few more historical facts on WWC Puerto Rico's 51 Years of History and Heritage.
This year marks the Fiftieth Anniversary of the WWC Puerto Rican Championship. That title has been defended throughout the Island. it produced WWE and NWA Hall of Famers. even stars from Mexico Japan, and locally on the Island held it from the now-retired NJPW star: Hideo Saito, Chato Guerrero from the LWO in WCW, the also retired, Hiram Tua, both members of La Anexion: Angel Fashion, and Mike Mendoza held the title.
the now-defunct WWC North American Heavyweight Championship was created on April 5th, 1974 due to the arrival of the late Gil Hayes, a Stampede Wrestling legend in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, and which last year's WWC Anniversary Show was dedicated as part of the founders and pillars of the old Capitol Sports Promotions now WWC. legends who are no longer with us held the championship from Pierre Martel, Eric The Red, Hartford Love, Roger Kirby, Mad Dog Pierre LaFebvre, Buddy Landell, Don Kent, Killer Karl Krupp, Jos LeDuc, even WWE Hall of Famers: Ernie Ladd, Gorilla Monsoon (who with Carlos Colon and Victor Jovica founded WWC), Pedro Morales, and "Macho Man" Randy Savage held the coveted belt. Though like the WWC Puerto Rican Championship, the now-defunct WWC North American Heavyweight Championship was created Fifty years ago. like the other former territory member promotions who broke away from NWA in 1988, at that time the WWE under Vince K. McMahon, Jr. expanded nationally putting prior NWA member promotions even the old NWA Georgia Championship Wrestling, and Toronto, Ontario, Canada's Maple Leaf Wrestling out of business. the late Jim Crockett, Jr. bought out the remaining NWA members: the old NWA Championship Wrestling from Florida and the UWF under Bill Watts, (then known as NWA Mid-South Wrestling.) having them folded only for Crockett to sell it to Ted Turner becoming WCW. just like the CWA in Memphis, Continental Wrestling Federation (fka NWA Southeast) World Class Championship Wrestling in Dallas, Texas, and the Pacific Northwest. WWC was no longer an NWA member anymore. leading to its North American Championship being deactivated on April 15th, 1989. Invader # 1 was the last to hold the title. then on August 31st, 1991. "Raging Bull" Manny Fernandez as the now-defunct Pembroke, North Carolina's South Atlantic Pro Wrestling Champion returned to Puerto Rico for WWC as being billed the WWC North American Champion. form there it retired. The WWC North American Championship had the same lineage as other former NWA member promotions in America and throughout Canada and was inspired by the lineage to today's WWE NXT North American Heavyweight Championship currently held by Oba Femi and WWE NXT Women's North American Championship currently held by Keilani Jordan.
This year's WWC Anniversary honoree, Shane Sewell, and Val Venis also trained fellow Peterborough, Ontario native Bobby Roode, a former TNA World Heavyweight, TNA World Tag Team, WWE NXT, United States, also held the now-defunct WWE Raw and SmackDown! Tag Team Championships (After this year's Wrestlemania in Philadelphia both brands reactivated their own Tag Team Championships, Raw with the returned World Tag Team and SmackDown! with the WWE Tag Team Championships) with current WWW Raw Star: Chad Gable and former WWE star: Nic Nemeth (fka Dolph Ziggler). on February 22nd of this year, Roode retired from the Squared Circle to currently being a WWE Producer. Roode also appeared in IWA Puerto Rico's Original run at Juicio Final 2005 teamed with Eric Young then a year later in WWC for a short stint.
Even though both appeared separately in Puerto Rico for WWC during the early 1980's, both Toronto, Ontario natives: John Bonello and Randy Scott held the NWA World Tag Team Championship (Detroit version) twice in 1980. the same year, Big Time Wrestling, a former NWA member promotion in the Motor City went out of business and closed its doors forever. it was known back then as simply NWA Detroit.
in 1988, as part of WWC's 15th Anniversary Show, they even had an ad for Puerto Rico's Kentucky Fried Chicken locations. Those who purchased the bucket get a poster of their favorite wrestler. Here is the video.
There is also the original theme song for WWC's Anniversary events.
